Overview

Raised Right is a family-owned pet food company that makes human-grade, limited-ingredient fare for companion animals. It specializes in fresh, home-cooked style cat foods that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Every single ingredient used in the company’s recipes is traceable and has a purpose. Raised Right takes pride in not using fillers or preservatives, lab testing every batch of food, and being the first company to voluntarily submit a recipe to Check Your Pet Food.

In 2019, Raised Right received the Innovation Award for Nutrition from the Innovative Veterinary Care Journal. More recently, it was named to the 2023 List of Trusted Pet Foods by Truth About Pet Food.

Could Raised Right be the “purrfect” food for your cat? Read on to find out!

Raised Right product ranges and flavors

Raised Right offers four recipes for adult cats in two textures. These cat foods are cooked at low temperatures to eliminate pathogens while maintaining high moisture and nutrient levels, and are formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance. Let’s take a closer look at the different flavors.

Raised Right Original Cat Food

Raised Right Original recipes for adult cats are high in protein and contain less than 2% carbs. They contain only 12 ingredients each, starting with turkey or chicken thigh and organ meats, which are rich in B vitamins and other nutrients.

Other ingredients include blueberries which are high in antioxidants, carrots which are packed with vitamin A, cod liver oil which is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, and kelp which contains vitamin K1 and magnesium. Taurine and thiamine mononitrate are added to the recipes as well.

Raised Right’s Original recipes for adult cats come in the following flavors:

Raised Right Paté Cat Food

Raised Right Paté recipes for adult cats

Raised Right Paté recipes for adult cats are almost the same as the Original ones, only these contain pumpkin for a mushier texture, making them a better option for cats with delicate gums or missing teeth. Pumpkin is also very nutritious and especially rich in vitamin A, and is easily digestible which can be helpful for kitties with sensitive stomachs.

These high-protein, low-carb recipes contain only 13 ingredients or less, including chicken or turkey thigh and organ meats, organic spearmint, eggshell powder, and flaxseed oil. They also have added thiamine and taurine, which are essential for felines.

Raised Right’s Paté recipes for adult cats come in the following flavors:

  • Turkey & Pumpkin Paté for Adult Cats
  • Chicken & Pumpkin Paté for Adult Cats

Why Wag! likes Raised Right

Here are some reasons why Raised Right is a highly rated cat food.

Convenient

Raised Right lets you feed your cat home-cooked style food without having to deal with the hassle of grocery shopping and cooking. The company delivers to all 48 contiguous states for free, and to Alaska and Hawaii for a fee. Serving Raised Right to your cat is easy; simply defrost overnight in the refrigerator and scoop the correct portion when it’s time to eat.

Vet formulated and recommended

Raised Right was crafted with renowned veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker and pet food formulation expert Steve Brown. Dr. Georgia Jeremiah, pet nutrition expert and one of Wag!’s veterinary consultants, also personally recommends Raised Right to her clients.

Dr. Jeremiah says, “Raised Right cat food offers a whole-food diet with real meat as the initial ingredient, ensuring a high-protein meal. Including organ meats for vital nutrients and antioxidants, their recipes often feature limited ingredients for simplicity and digestibility. Notably, they exclude grains, potatoes, and preservatives while prioritizing safety with batch testing and traceable ingredients.”

Fit for human consumption

From day one, Raised Right has focused on providing the same quality of food for pets as that for humans. Its cat food recipes contain human-grade ingredients that are gently cooked in a USDA-inspected facility and have passed the same standards required for human consumption. In the past, the company even did Food Race Fridays where co-founder Braeden Ruud went head-to-head with cats and dogs in Raised Right eating contests.

Lab safety tested

Raised Right is cooked at low temperatures to kill pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria while maintaining high levels of moisture and nutrients. Each batch is then tested at a lab to ensure it is safe to eat and only shipped when it has passed the lab safety test. Test results of every batch can be viewed on the company’s website.

Environmentally conscious

In 2021, Raised Right partnered with Carbonfund to offset the carbon emissions coming from its home delivery service shipments. The following year, it partnered with rePurpose Global and became plastic neutral certified. This means that for every package Raised Right sells, the equivalent amount of plastic is removed from the ecosystem.

Concerns & considerations

What do pet parents need to consider before purchasing Raised Right cat food?

No recipes for kittens

Raised Right cat food recipes are formulated for adult cats. There are no recipes for kittens or all life stages, so you’ll have to start your little one on a different brand and then switch to Raised Right when they’re old enough.

Can take up a lot of freezer space

Because Raised Right is a fresh food, it needs to be kept in the freezer until it is ready to defrost. There is no a la carte option when ordering online and there are only 2 box sizes to choose from: sample (4 bags, paid shipping) and full (16 bags, free shipping). You have to buy 16 bags at a time if you want free shipping.

Expensive

Since Raised Right is made with whole-food, human-grade ingredients, you can expect it to be on the pricey side. Each 1-pound bag of food costs $10.99. According to Raised Right’s cat food calculator, it would cost $4.12 per day to feed a 10-pound cat with normal activity levels and no weight issues.

What pet parents say about Raised Right

“My two special needs (GI issues) cats love Raised Right. This formula (turkey) has been a major part of their medical care.”

“All four of my rescue kitties absolutely love this food. Even my super picky eater has taken to it. They are less bloated and the litter boxes are much easier to clean with no more stinky smell.”

“I like to add some hot water to it and the cats go nuts for it. Their coats are beautiful and shiny, and they're all super healthy.”

Raised Right brand history

Raised Right was founded by the Ruud family (Braeden, Mary Ann, and Larry) following the melamine pet food recall of 2007. With numerous brands and thousands of cats and dogs affected, Mary Ann decided to cook homemade food for their pets using the same ingredients they ate themselves so they know exactly what’s in it.

Friends and family soon started asking about their food, but it wasn’t until Braeden was completing his master’s degree in entrepreneurship at Babson College that the company was formalized. Raised Right expanded its home delivery service nationwide in 2019, expanded to Canada in 2020 and 2021, and introduced its cat paté recipes in 2022.

Through its growth, Raised Right remains a family-owned company and continues to provide quality pet food that’s safe enough for humans to eat.
