We Feed Raw is one of several popular
raw dog foods on the market. It's a subscription-based dog food company producing meal plans that perfectly cater to your pup's nutritional needs. We Feed Raw's recipes are loaded with nutrients and highly digestible thanks to fresh ingredients and minimal processing.
We like the brand for its ingredient quality, catered meal plans, and high
protein content. We're also fans of the high-pressure processing method, which removes pathogens while preserving nutritional value.

We Feed Raw dog food products
You can choose from six varieties of We Feed Raw, all of which are formulated by a certified animal nutritionist. (It's unclear who that nutritionist is, although the company's website says they hold a PhD.)
Before we dig into each product, you should know a few things about ordering and shipping:
- If you're creating your own box of five-pound patties, you'll need to order at least 30 pounds of food per shipment.
- Orders must be made in 30-pound increments — if you want more than 30 pounds of food, your next option is 60 pounds, then 90 pounds, and so on.
- Alternatively, order a Small, Classic, or Big Box with recipes already chosen for you.
If you want to try before you buy, you can get a discount with a two-week trial.

We Feed Raw venison recipe
Venison recipe
Like all other We Feed Raw recipes, the venison
flavor consists almost entirely of animal-based ingredients: 80% meat, 10% organ meat,
and 10% edible
bone, plus added essential vitamins and minerals.
With only six ingredients including a vitamin and mineral blend, this limited-ingredient food is a great choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs. The novel protein source also makes it suitable for dogs with poultry allergies. Just be aware that it also contains multiple protein sources (venison and beef).
Top 5 ingredients:
- Venison
- Beef heart
- Beef liver
- Beef kidney
- Beef necks (with bone)
We Feed Raw's venison recipe contains 41.1% protein as dry matter and 33.8%
fat as dry matter.

We Feed Raw lamb recipe
Lamb recipe
We Feed Raw's lamb recipe is almost identical to
its venison recipe, just with lamb instead of venison as the top
ingredient. It consists of 80% meat, 10% organ meat, and 10% edible
bones. Plus, We Feed Raw's lamb recipe contains the same vitamin and
mineral blend, which includes
vitamin E supplements and omega-3
fatty acids from
flaxseeds.
We
Feed Raw's lamb recipe also contains multiple protein sources, with
beef organ meats and bones as the top four ingredients after lamb.
Top 5 ingredients:
- Lamb
- Beef heart
- Beef liver
- Beef kidney
- Beef necks (with bone)
We Feed Raw's lamb recipe contains 45.5% protein as dry matter and 31.1% fat as dry matter. It has the best fat-to-protein ratios of We Feed Raw's red meat recipes.

We Feed Raw duck recipe
Duck recipe
We Feed Raw's duck recipe consists of only five ingredients, with the same ratio of meat, organ meat, and edible bones
as the other flavor variations. It contains meat from multiple protein
sources, with turkey organ meat and bones included alongside duck.
Top 5 ingredients:
- Duck
- Turkey gizzards
- Turkey tails
- Turkey liver
- Vitamin + mineral mix
We Feed Raw's duck recipe contains 44.2% protein as dry matter and 37.1% fat as dry matter. High fat content in this food makes it less suitable for dogs that need a low-fat diet.

We Feed Raw turkey recipe
Turkey recipe
The
turkey recipe is one of the only
single-protein variations of We Feed Raw. It has the same ratio of 80%
meat, 10% organ, and 10% bone as other recipes, and it only contains five ingredients:
- Turkey tails
- Turkey gizzards
- Turkey wings
- Turkey liver
- Vitamin + mineral mix
With 48.6% protein as dry matter and 25% fat as dry matter, We Feed Raw's turkey recipe has the best fat-to-protein ratio, making it the best option for weight management.

We Feed Raw chicken recipe
Chicken recipe
We Feed Raw's chicken recipe is similar to its
turkey recipe, with a single animal protein source and only five ingredients. It has the same 80% meat, 10% organ, and 10% bone ratio as
other recipes.
Top 5 ingredients:
- Chicken hearts
- Chicken backs
- Chicken leg quarters
- Chicken liver
- Vitamin + mineral mix
We Feed Raw's chicken recipe contains 44.8% protein as dry matter and 34.4% fat as dry matter.

We Feed Raw beef recipe
Beef recipe
Another single-protein recipe, the beef flavor is suitable for pups with poultry allergies and contains just five ingredients:
- Beef heart
- Beef liver
- Beef kidney
- Beef necks (with bone)
- Vitamin + mineral mix
We Feed Raw's beef recipe contains 38.1% protein as dry matter and 31.2%, which are above average fat and protein percentages but lower than some other recipes, like venison and duck.
Why Wag! likes We Feed Raw dog food
Let's dig into a few reasons why Wag! gives We Feed Raw 5 paws up!
Contains human-grade ingredients
Whole, human-grade meat is the first ingredient in all recipes, which are manufactured in USDA-certified facilities. We Feed Raw uses no artificial preservatives or
colors in its dog foods and only the best quality protein sources.
Made with high-pressure processing
Worried about feeding your dog raw food due to the
health risks for humans? We Feed Raw uses high-pressure processing (HPP) to remove harmful pathogens, including
salmonella,
listeria, and
E. coli. Using pressure instead of heat ensures both food safety and nutritional value.
That said, if you're interested in feeding raw, always purchase a commercial diet like We Feed Raw instead of going the DIY route. Home-cooked raw diets aren't always safe or nutritionally complete, according to
Wag! veterinary consultant Dr. Linda Simon MVB MRCVS.
Limited ingredients
We Feed Raw is an excellent option if your pup has
food allergies or sensitivities. None of We Feed Raw's recipes contain more than six ingredients, one of which is a vitamin and mineral blend that's unlikely to trigger an allergic reaction or sensitivity.
Free shipping in the US
We Feed Raw offers free delivery on all bulk and meal plan orders. You can arrange orders at different frequencies, from every two to six weeks. This subscription-based delivery service is super convenient if you want to put your pup on a raw diet but have trouble finding decent raw food at your local pet store.

Concerns & considerations
Here are a few things to know and bear in mind before purchasing We Feed Raw for your dog.
Concerns about grain-free diets
The pet food community has concerns about the safety of
feeding dogs a grain-free diet. In 2019, the
FDA launched an investigation into reports of dogs on grain-free diets developing non-hereditary canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The study is especially interested in dog foods that contain high proportions of legumes, pulses, peas, and potatoes.
The FDA has no new meaningful evidence to share as of December 2022. It's worth noting that We Feed Raw doesn't contain high proportions of legumes, pulses, peas, or potatoes, which are the main ingredients the FDA is investigating.
Consult your vet if you have concerns about feeding your dog a grain-free diet.
Pricier than other dog foods
We Feed Raw is pricier than other dog foods due to its ingredient quality and subscription model. It'll cost around $65 per week to exclusively feed a 50-pound, moderately active dog the chicken, turkey, and beef recipes.
(Note: Prices may vary depending on your location and your dog's weight, activity level, preferences, and other factors.)
Lack of protein variety
While We Feed Raw offers six varieties, several of these flavors contain more than one meat source. The venison, lamb, and beef recipes all list beef as a main ingredient. The duck recipe also contains turkey, so there's not much variety for dogs with a
beef or
poultry allergy.
Storage issues due to bulk order requirements
We Feed Raw dog food needs to be refrigerated or frozen after it's delivered, and you have to order in 30-pound increments. While this bulk order setup has its perks, it also means finding storage space for all that dog food might be
tricky!
Luckily, the food stays good for up to six months in the freezer and for up to four days in the fridge.
What pet parents say about We Feed Raw dog food
"Recently started giving my 3.5 month old American bully we feed raw and he definitely seems to enjoy meal time more. We feed raw has been a good experience so far, the transition went well and the pup seems to be doing great. Meals have been delivered in good time and appear good quality. So far so great lol"
"My dog took to raw immediately. Her bowl is spotless after mealtime (unless I try to slip something else in with her raw, then it’s licked clean and left). It’s too early to note the health benefits but she’s definitely happier at mealtime!"
We Feed Raw dog food history
We Feed Raw's story began in 2009, when the company's founder, Alissa Zalneraitis, switched her dogs from processed dog food to her own homemade, all-natural raw diet. She immediately saw improvements in her dog's health and energy levels.*
Over time, Alissa started to make recipes for her friends and then friends of friends as the company grew. Alissa's fiance, Rich, is also a co-founder — he dealt with the production side while she dealt with the business side.
Tragically, four years later, Alissa was diagnosed with terminal cancer at age 35. In 2014, just a year after her diagnosis, she passed away.
Despite their grief, Alissa's family rallied together to keep the business — and Alissa's dream — alive. Today, We Feed Raw is steadily growing and making raw diets for dogs accessible to everyone. The Zalneraitis family is still heavily involved with We Feed Raw, with Alissa's sister, Amy, serving as Chief Brand Officer.
*It's best to leave raw diets to the pros instead of DIYing your own. Home-cooked raw diets
aren't always safe or nutritionally complete, according to Wag! veterinary consultant Dr. Linda Simon MVB MRCVS.

How does Wag! determine paw ratings for dog food?
Our editorial team conducts independent research when choosing which foods to feature and how to rate them. Our paw ratings are largely based on the ingredients and nutritional content of each food. Here’s a quick guide to what our paw ratings mean:
- 1 paw: High filler content, meat not listed as first ingredient
- 2 paws: Meat meal, bone meal or meat by-products listed as first ingredient
- 3 paws: Named meat listed as first ingredient (e.g., chicken)
- 4 paws: Same as 3 paws, but also made with whole, limited ingredients and minimal processing
- 5 paws: Same as 4 paws, but is also veterinarian or veterinary body approved and includes human-grade ingredients
- Half-paws may be awarded for extra benefits, like affordability, trustworthiness, etc.
