Get ready for some outdoor adventure in the city of Altamont, 12 miles southwest of Effingham. You and your pawtastic pup will enjoy visiting the Rock Cave Nature Preserve which is a hiker’s dream. Take pup on leash throughout this area and marvel at the scenic beauty that surrounds you. You will see ravines, outcroppings and cliffs throughout these 79 acres where you can walk for miles with Fido by your side. Be sure to keep your fur-ever friend on leash here to keep this park’s natural features pristine. There are no restrooms or water available, so plan accordingly.

1430th/ North 1600th
In the 1430th/ North 1600th Street neighborhood of Effingham, you must add Hendelmeyer Park to your pup’s to-do list! There are 20 acres of sports courts and fields, the perfect place to let Fido romp on an extended leash. Tennis courts and a skate park top off the list for the sport’s enthusiast! Go for a walk along the paved paths or relax on the park benches throughout. Or try Effingham City Park, better known as Community Park, for similar amenities plus an 18-hole disc golf course. Restrooms and water fountains are on site. Be sure to bring mutt mitts.

Effingham City Center
Pack up your pup and head to the City Center neighborhood of Effingham, where you will find pup-friendly Bliss Park. This small and welcoming park has tons of fun for you and Fido. Let the kiddies play on the playground equipment or basketball courts while you enjoy a rest and relaxation on the surrounding benches. Or take them for a walk on the paved paths through the memorial rose garden located here. Don’t forget to bring lunch, snacks and plenty of water for your day’s outing. Restrooms are on site. Please keep Fido on leash and bring clean up mitts.

Mason
The Wildcat Hollow State Habitat Area in the town of Mason, 14 miles south of Effingham, covers a whopping 560 acres of outdoor adventure for your and your fur-ever friend. Spend some quality time here hiking on the miles of trails that are scattered throughout, or go ‘off-road’ and carve your own path! Many areas are remote enough to let Fido spend some time off leash. Hunting is allowed during certain times of the year, so plan accordingly. There are portable restrooms, but no water, so be sure to bring your own and a camera to capture Fido having fun!

Northwest Effingham
In the northwest Effingham neighborhood of Effingham, you will find a pup-tastic trail for you and your pup to hike. Trail Recreation Effingham County, or TREC for short, offers residents and visitors a 3-mile trail for walking, skating and biking. This paved path has benches to rest upon along the hike. This trail eventually connects to 30 additional miles of trails. The northern-most branch, referred to as the Calico Trail, offers a challenging section with 14% grades, for the biking enthusiast. Part of the trail crosses the Little Wabash River for beautiful, scenic views. Pups should stay on leash throughout.
