What are K9 Advantix Allergies?
K9 Advantix is a popular waterproof, topical agent used to kill and prevent fleas and ticks from infestation on dogs. This product is applied to the dog once a month. K9 Advantix is available in two varieties: the original K9 Advantix and K9 Advantix II. There are differences between the two varieties, as the original K9 Advantix is effective in the prevention and killing of ticks and fleas; however, this original type does not kill the eggs, pupae, and larvae of either pest. In order for K9 Advantix to be effective, the ticks and fleas must hatch first before the product can kill them.

Permethrin and imidacloprid are two powerful ingredients in the K9 Advantix products. K9 Advantix II also contains the repellent pyriproxyfen. Upon application, dogs may have side-effects from either type of this product.

We recently rescued an 18-lb.,8 yr old shihtzu that was treated with K9 Advantix II the day we brought him home. He seemed ok for the first few days, but as time has gone on, he has stopped eating,seems lethargic just wanting to lay in his crate/sleep all day. Could this be caused by the K9 Advantix treatment? It was a week & a half ago that he was treated with Advantix, & these symptoms have begun just over past few days. Before this, he enjoyed walking, playing fetch, & was eating ok. Please help!! It would seem strange to me that Scooter would be fine and then start to show these signs if it were related to the Advantix. It would probably be a good idea to have an examination with a veterinarian so that they can see what his health status is and if he needs any treatment. I hope that all goes well for him.

Lethargy No Energy Loss Of Appetite
I applied K9 Advantix II to both of my dogs Thursday night and have used this product before. My boxer has always acted a little weird after but my Shichon has never acted weird. But one Friday my Shichon was very lethargic all day long. He had no energy and didn’t eat or leave the couch. Could this be a reaction to the Advantix II. It was a new box for both. Help!

Lethargy and a loss of appetite are uncommon symptoms of K9 Advantix II use; normally we see symptoms including localised skin irritation, vomiting (from licking) among other symptoms. Are you sure you gave Cosmo the right dosage? The medications are safety tested at up to five times normal dose so should still be fine; if there is no improvement or other symptoms present you should visit your Veterinarian. I put K9 Advantix 2 on my bichon/maltese mix. She is 7.6 lbs. A day after I applied it there was a small raised circle where the medicine was placed. Today, the area looks to be an open rash and bleeding a little. Should I bath the dog and apply peroxide? Will it heal on own?

Some local skin irritation is a common side effect of spot on flea & tick spot on medications and are generally self limiting; you should use a dilute antiseptic (peroxide is too damaging to skin capillaries) to bathe the area and monitor it for improvement. I gave my do K9 advantix II May and June 21st. July 21st he became very ill. Very lethargic, nausea and vomited once. He will not eat. His fever went to 104. Could this be a reaction to the Advantix? His blood work, xray and ultra sound and normal. The fluid treatment is bringing his fever down.

K9 Advantix II (imidacloprid, permethrin and pyriproxyfen) is a monthly topical spot on treatment for use in dogs which may cause gastrointestinal symptoms as side effects: “Side effects may include signs of skin irritation such as redness, scratching, or other signs of discomfort. Gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting or diarrhoea have also been reported. If these or other side effects (such as lethargy or agitation) occur, consult your Veterinarian or call 1-800-433-9874”, but not fever or other symptoms. Hi, I've used advantix on my beagle for 7 years and she seems ok. But after 2 months of using it on my boyfriends 11 year old Shephard he seems to have severe dandruff. Could this be from the advantix? It is also June in New York so it could just be seasonal? Thanks!

Skin irritation especially at the site of application is the most common side effect of using any topical flea & tick spot on treatment; you should try using a different product with a different active ingredient next month to see if there are any differences. I thought K9 Advantix II was a miracle last year in ridding my 2 Pomeranian's of fleas then. I used it this year as a preventative. Now my 1 1/2 year old is sooo itchy. It breaks my heart. Its been a week with no hope. I used SOOS anti itch shampoo and and have been giving her Benadryl on the daily. No improvement. I took her to the Vet and he said he could offer her a shot that would help with the itch, but he has never heard of an allergy to this. I thought that to be strange. My other 3 year old pom was itchy as the other times they were on it for a day or 2 and it was done. I don't know what else to do for my little one. I don't want to keep running to the vet for no real help. I guess from reading everyone's experience is that I should wait it out the month until it leaves her system?? I wish I saw updates from everyone. I am grateful that she is showing no other symptoms but extreme itchiness.
