Dog Areas in East Point

East Point, Georgia is a bedroom community for the city of Atlanta. While it might not get as much attention as the larger city, East Point has a pretty interesting history. It was founded back in 1870; at the time, only 16 families lived in the community. The reason for its founding? You might’ve guessed that, like many Southern towns, it was founded to be a railroad terminal. Today, East Point houses over 9,000 families, so we can safely say it’s developed into a pretty busy city! Popular shows like Stranger Things have even filmed scenes in East Point; what a glow-up!

Unfortunately, East Point isn’t the most dog-friendly city in the area. There are no dog parks and no dog-friendly dining options, but don’t fret too much! With Atlanta being just 15 minutes away, fun is never too far away. East Point does have a couple of veterinarian clinics, and if neither of those work for you, there are many more options just a few miles away.

If you’re looking to see a city with a rich history and a laid-back vibe but still want the amenities of a larger city nearby, East Point can’t be beat!

Want to play with your pup while getting your caffeine fix? Head to ParkGrounds, located in Atlanta’s Reynoldstown neighborhood, which is just 15 minutes from East Point. Part dog park, part coffee shop, ParkGrounds allows you to have the best of both worlds. The play area for your pooch is right next to the coffee shop. Don’t let the coffee distract you, though; you’re still responsible for making sure your dog plays nice. If you’re nervous about letting your pup in the play area, he’s welcome to join you at an outdoor table. While there, he’ll need to be on his leash.

Oakhurst Dog Park, located in Decatur, has plenty of room for your energetic pooch to run around. He can even play a game of hide and seek with his friends, as part of the park is filled with trees. Water fountains are available to keep your pooch from getting overheated, but you’ll want to bring your own waste disposal bags for easy clean-up. This off-leash dog park is about 30 minutes away from East Point, so you won’t have to drive too far. Have a ball – or at least play with one – at Oakhurst Dog Park!

Does your dog get excited when he sees his leash? Does he love going for long walks? If so, visit Edgewood in Atlanta, which has an access point to the Trolley Line Trail. It's about 20 minutes from East Point. This trail is seven miles long and runs through several historic parts of the Atlanta area. Fido will need to be on his leash for the duration of the walk, and it’s your responsibility to clean up any messes he makes. You wouldn’t want any other hikers stepping in anything left behind, would you? You’ll also want to remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water for both you and your canine companion.

Castleberry Hill is known for being home to many indie art studios, but it’s also home to Railside Dog Park! This two-acre dog park is completely fenced in, allowing for some off-leash fun. This park is mostly just room for your dog to run around, but in the middle of Atlanta, just outside of downtown, that’s a luxury that your dog will certainly appreciate! You’ll want to bring along some water for your pup, especially if it’s hot out, as there isn’t much shade. Waste bags are also not provided, so please bring some with you from home.

Just eight miles from East Point, you and Fido can go explore Grant Park together! Grant Park isn’t a dog park, so your pup will need to be leashed, but we don’t think he’ll mind too much. Many dogs come visit the park, so there’s a good chance Fido will find a friend or two to play with. Parking for Grant Park can be tricky; locals recommend first checking one of the parking lots and if nothing is available, looking for free, on-the-street parking. Make sure to bring along some waste bags for any cleaning up you might need to take care of.
