Montgomery is nestled along both sides of the Fox River in Illinois. This village is proud of its small-town characteristics, as well as of the many parks and trails that dot the landscape. All parks and trails are dog-friendly and welcome leashed pups to enjoy the outdoors with their human pals.

Take your pup for an outdoor adventure in Montgomery Park. This family favorite hugs the Fox River, and features a picnic pavilion, playground, plenty of open green areas, and paths for long walks with Fido. Benches lie along the paths for resting or simply contemplating the river as it flows gently by. Another popular spot for walking is South Broadway Park in downtown Montgomery. Occupying a small area along the Fox River, this park provides scenic views of the river and the wildlife that live along it.

This small town is not short on trails to explore. The V.L. Gilman Trail travels 12 miles and crosses the Fox River just north of downtown Montgomery. At various parks along its way, you can find picnic areas, shelters and restrooms for a quick refresh before hitting the trail again. The Fox River Trail covers 10.4 miles as it travels south of the Gilman Trail through Montgomery, and further south towards Oswego. Like the Gilman Trail, there are ample opportunities to view wildlife and to take advantage of convenient parking areas, restrooms and shelters.

The Village Center neighborhood of Montgomery features several parks, all of which are dog-friendly for leashed pups. Austin Memorial Park sits on the east side of the Fox River, opposite Montgomery Park. In addition to human amenities like a playground, sports fields and courts, and restrooms, the best part of this park for Fido is the large, open green space and hiking paths. A doggo and his person can also relax and have a bite at one of Austin’s picnic areas.  The Village Center also hosts the South Island Park and the South River St Park, both of which feature walking paths along the river and are open from sunrise to one hour after sunset.

Montgomery’s Boulder Hill neighborhood, not to be confused with the village of the same name just to the south, is home to the lovely, 1.3-acre SuzanJohn Park. The park features large open grass areas, paved walkways and many mature shade trees. Nearby is a playground for the young humans, and a sitting area complete with picnic tables and benches for relaxing or sharing a meal with your fur-buddy. The walkways offer easy strolling or running with your leashed Fido in tow. Along the southern border of the neighborhood is a public walking path with access from Deer Run Drive. It is destined to become part of Montgomery’s Bike and Pedestrian Plan, an ambitious project by which the city is providing more walking and biking space. Good news for you and your furry friend!

This residential neighborhood is home to the dog-friendly Briarcliff Woods Park and Lake, comprising 17 acres of natural grass meadow and mature oak trees that provide shade in the summer. Your leashed pup is welcome to enjoy a walk with you in the open areas, or join you for some ice fishing on the lake in the winter. When you need a rest, this park features a large sitting area with benches and picnic table near the playground. The nearby town of Aurora lies adjacent to Montgomery, and its South Park neighborhood hosts the Phillips Park Dog Park. This is a double-gated, 3-acre park with benches and plenty of waste bags and containers. In one corner, there is a smaller fenced area for doggy time outs. While the dogs romp and play, owners can relax and chat on the benches provided inside the park. Phillips Park, next to the dog run, offers trails for folks and their fur-babies to walk, jog or bike, and restroom facilities are provided. This 325-acre park includes a waterfall, fishing piers and sunken gardens, making this an unfurgettable stop for you and your furry Bestie.

Just a short drive from Montgomery is Naperville, home to the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, within which lies the Springbrook Prairie Dog Park. The dog park features an enclosed area that includes fields, and trails that pass through areas of prairie grasses and creeks, both of which are doggy heaven! The trails are of compacted dirt, and it’s a treat to walk with your dog off-leash, although leashes are required in the Preserve outside of the dog park. Many nature sights, sounds and smells will greet you as you amble along. Picnic tables and pavilions inside the Preserve are available for humans and their fur-babies to rest or enjoy a snack or meal. The park is open all year to enjoy with your pup!
