About 20 miles from the Canadian border lies the city of Plattsburgh, an old town with a peculiar history. This French settlement turned military center has seen a lot in the last 300 years, including both Revolutionary War battles and bloody skirmishes during the War of 1812. Plattsburgh has settled down substantially in the last century and is now a peaceful home to many pets and their families. There are plenty of adventures for fun-seeking fur families to enjoy, and the city isn’t lacking in amenities for its pup-ulation either, boasting 3 pet supply stores and 12 veterinary clinics!

Pooches and owners interested in some bonding time outside of the traditional park setting should check out Plattsburgh’s own Elf Farm Winery! This adorable vineyard is open daily and has great lunch and dinner offerings to pair with their local handcrafted wines. Pups looking for dinner and a show should consider dropping by on a Sunday evening during their open mic night. Your hound will be howling right along in no time!

The Terry James Gordon Recreational Path is perfect for four-legged history buffs looking to raise their heart rate (and their IQ)! This rail-trail traverses a number of historically significant sites in 1.6 miles, like the U.S. Oval National Historic District and the old U.S. Armed Forces Barracks. Pooches intrigued by the paw-anormal will be interested to know that the path also passes the Old Post Cemetery, where many visitors have observed ghostly apparitions! You may want to hold your pup close for this adventure!

Ruffly 35 miles away in neighboring Vermont is an excellent park that is full of surprises for the whole pack! Oakledge Park in Burlington has everything a fur family could want: secluded beaches with swimming access, an interactive tree house for two-legged kiddos, scenic biking and walking paths, tennis courts, and cozy picnic areas complete with grills! All of these amenities are fantastic alone, but when combined with the picturesque backdrop of the Adirondack Mountains and Lake Champlain in the foreground, it just can’t be beat! Sure, this park is a bit of a drive from Plattsburgh, but once you get here, you will see it is very much worth the trip! If that's not enough adventure for one day, nearby Starr Farm Off-leash Dog Park is a great place to continue the fun!

Set on the beautiful Lake Champlain, Point Au Roche State Park is a local family favorite and is deemed by many to be the best park around! There are several nature trails for you and Fido to blaze, and don’t forget the camera -- there is no telling what wildlife you may encounter! After embarking on such a wild adventure, what’s better than a relaxing swim? Here, you can float without worry, thanks to the watchful lifeguards! The only conditions for visiting pets are that they must be leashed and up-to-date on vaccinations. Dogs are not permitted in the picnic or shower areas. Be mindful that the park has a “bring in, bring out” policy, meaning there no trash cans in the park (you may want to bring some empty grocery bags along!).

During the summer, Plattsburgh City Beach is the hottest spot around for local K-9s! This freshwater oasis is a favorite for humans and pooches to cool their tired paws and splash around with their pack. The park boasts a small dog run for pups more interested in fetching than working on their dog paddle skills. There is also a snack bar, which offers light fare for doggy duos to nibble on, and a tiki bar that serves up refreshing mixed drinks for thirsty humans to enjoy. Make sure you bring cash when you come because there is an $8 fee per vehicle!

Whether your pup is a resident or just passing through, Plattsburgh’s own Valcour Brewing Company is a unique destination that is not to be missed. Built in 1838, The Old Stone Barracks, which once served as a military housing and medical center, has been renovated and transformed into a state-of-the-art craft brewery and inn! Dogs are more than welcome to join their owners at their several outdoor tables, where you can feast on locally-sourced offerings such as gourmet salads, hot paninis, crispy flatbreads, and juicy hand-patted burgers. Pair your scrumptious meal with one of their signature in-house crafted brews, like the popular Holden’s Golden for you, and a fresh bowl of cool water for your pooch!
