West Lafayette mirrors its sister city, Lafayette, with its many  outdoor activities and amenities for our four-legged friend. There is no shortage of veterinarian care with the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in town. You'll find three other veterinary hospitals and clinics within the city's city limits. These offer routine care and emergency treatment for both resident and visiting dogs.

The city is replete with open spaces and places for dogs and their people to take a walk or explore some scenery. The city itself maintains thirteen parks spread out among the various neighborhoods. Prophetstown State Park is accessed at 5545 Swisher Road. This state park is over 900 acres of land, and much of it is restored prairie and marshland. The forested areas include douglas fir and sycamore, among others.

The state park also offers options for a hiker with a leashed dog. There are three easy hikes with one of them being paved. Two more are for the more ambitious or experienced hiker and wind through forested areas and wetlands near the Tippecanoe River. The state park also has a campsite with full hook-ups and electric available. Dogs are free to camp with their people as long as they are under control at all times on no less than an eight foot leash, and they are cleaned up after.

West Lafayette has a few places for a person and dog to visit. The Econo Lodge welcomes a traveler with up to two dogs under 50 pounds for an additional fee of $15 per dog per night. Four Points by Sheraton is another option for the person traveling with a four-legged companion. This hotel allows one dog of up to forty pounds for no additional fee. The Sheraton has a limited number of dog-friendly rooms, so it is best to call in advance of any visit. Hungry? Head to Another Broken Egg Cafe, a dog-friendly restaurant located on Northwestern Avenue. This restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, and has outdoor seating to accommodate a person with a pup.

A separate area is always set aside for the small dogs. The dog park is grass-covered. Water is on-site, and a rinse station makes for a clean ride home. Doggie waste bags are conveniently provided.
