There are vending machines at the entrance. Fido can join you on the trail, but he will need to stay on a leash at all times. All it takes is one stray squirrel for your dog to go running off, and no one wants that!

Raccoon River Park

Almost all dogs love playing outside, and chances are that your dog is no exception! Why not travel to Raccoon River Dog Park, which is about twenty minutes from Capitol Heights? This massive dog park spans 12 acres of land, so even the most energetic of dogs can burn off all their excess energy! Raccoon River is completely fenced in, and there’s a separate area for smaller dogs. You can bring along your dog’s favorite toy as long as he doesn’t get too territorial over it. Make sure to bring water and waste disposal bags along.

East Village

If you’re looking for somewhere to eat but want your loyal companion to tag along, visit East Village in Des Moines. This neighborhood is only about fifteen minutes from Capitol Heights, so you won’t have to trek too far. Get up early one Saturday morning and head to the farmers’ market, where you can buy delicious local produce and support local crafters. Around lunchtime, go to Scenic Route Bakery! They dish up incredible soups, sandwiches, and more! When the weather is nice out, Sparky can join you at an outdoor table. Make sure you have a leash.

Sargent Park

Chances are that your dog loves walking, and if he does, you have to pay Sargent Park in Des Moines a visit! This park is only about five minutes from Capitol Heights, and it has an access point to the Gay Lea Wilson Trail. This trail is over 20 miles long, but you don’t have to walk the full length. Fido is more than welcome to join you on the trail, but he does have to stay on his leash, as it’s common for wildlife to be seen. Make sure to have waste disposal bags and water on hand.

This dog park is decently-sized at eight acres, giving your dog plenty of space to run around with his furry friends! If your dog is on the smaller side or if he’s shy, there’s a separate section for him so he doesn’t have to be with bigger, rambunctious dogs. Ankeny Dog Park provides water and waste disposal bags for your use, so all you really need to bring is yourself and your pup. Have a ball!
