It’s time to take your dog on an adventure like no other. The High Trestle Trail is just 26 miles from Urbandale, but it is completely unique to the area. Rails-to-Trails has taken this part of the area and completely restored it. The highlight is the old rail trestle that brings foot traffic all year long. At an impressive 130 feet off the ground, it can give a full panorama view of the area. Be sure to keep your dog on the leash for their safety. The views are nothing if they aren’t barktastic and magical.

Des Moines

If travel just 30 miles from Urbandale, you will come to Snookie’s Malt Shop. They welcome you to join your dog for delicious, creamy shakes, malts, and floats. Get Fido a bowl of vanilla while you enjoy your favorite flavor. This place is all about the fun and friendly atmosphere. As long as Fido is on a leash, he’s welcome to stay and meet some new fur buddies. It may seem like a long drive for ice cream, but it is one of the few places in the area that will allow your dog to join you for a special treat! After all, Fido’s been a good boy -- doesn’t he deserve it?

Altoona

Gay Lea Wilson Trail is a quick 30-mile car ride from Urbandale, Iowa. But, once you see what Rails-to-Trails has in store for you, it will be your favorite destination! The trails branch off so that you can get to all your local destinations, including the library and post office. At the end of the main trail, you will find a lake area. There are picnic tables and lots of green meadows to lay in the sun. This nice little rest area is just the pawfect place to bring your dog for an afternoon of peace and relaxation.

Ankeny

Sometimes, you just need a good old fashioned dog park. That is where the Ankeny Dog Park comes in. It is about half an hour from Urbandale, but it is a true dog park. There are two fenced in areas: one for big dogs and another for smaller dogs. There is a pond that is set up just for Fido and his fur buddies to splash and play in. The standard amenities of a good dog park are in plentiful supply here. Cleaning and watering stations are available for those necessary doggie chores. Seating areas are also provided so you can relax while watching Fido romp with his new fur-iends.

Douglas Ave

Need a place to stay during your time in Urbandale? Econolodge on Douglas Avenue has got you covered. The dog-friendly rooms are guaranteed to be ready for you as soon as you check in. The hotel also hosts some fur-friendly days and events, so be sure to call and ask about them ahead of time. The Econolodge grounds are well-kept and you can walk your dog on a leash. There’s also a pool for you to sit and soak up some rays. Fido isn’t allowed to swim, though. The area boasts lots of attractions, too. The living history farm is located nearby, so be sure to check it out!
