Kankakee is the county seat of Kankakee County, located south of Chicago and about 30 miles west of the Illinois-Indiana border. The city may not be a bustling tourist destination, but it's still a furrific place to visit or live with Fido! Kankakee is home to public parks and preserves featuring water views and walking trails. But that’s not all! Kankakee knows how to treat its canine residents, and boasts its own dog park, several pet-friendly eateries, and two veterinary hospitals.

River Run Dog Park is a favorite spot among local dog owners in Kankakee, who often gather here to chat and let their pups play. The locals are friendly, and would be more than happy to welcome you and your pooch to the pack! The park has all the amenities you need, including benches, shade, and drinking water. Please note you'll need to obtain a permit before playing here.

Don't want to bother getting a permit? Don't fret! Bird Park is a public recreation spot right on the banks of Kankakee River, and is a good on-leash alternative to a dog park. There are several walking trails winding through the woods, and some shoreline where you and Sparky can share a picnic.

    #1 Southeast Homewood

Kankakee may be a nice place, but it's not the pet-friendliest place in the world. If you want to find a comfortable off-leash park, get ready to travel for about half an hour to Homewood, a village in Cook County and a suburb of Chicago. The southeastern part of the village is home to diverse but sleepy residential quarters, several public parks, and a dog run! Rover’s Run Dog Park is a roomy and fenced dog park with multiple facilities, such as agility equipment, a shade structure, and drinking water. Due to safety reasons, the park requires all doggie visitors to obtain a permit, but the park is worth it!

If you follow the stream of Kankakee River to the northwest, you'll find Midewin National Tall Grass Prairie, a gorgeous nature preserve and an amazing retreat where you can get some fresh air with your furry friend. The preserve has strict rules about pups, and your mutt should be on his best behavior and on-leash at all times. Feel free to walk around and explore the park. If you're looking for something a little more challenging, hit the Wauponsee Glacial Trail path. This is a difficult 23-mile hike winding throughout Will County, from Juliet to Custer Park. Bringing your own drinking water is strongly recommended.

The park is centered on DuPage River and has miles of hiking and walking trails. The real gem here, though, is the 7-acre dog park! Hammel Woods Dog Park, a members-only park, is filled with all the amenities you and Fido need for the pawfect day! Exercise with your buddy or let him run and play free with other mutts.
