Nags Head is a beach town, and Nags Head Beach is proof of why so many people come back year after year to enjoy it. Not only do people love Nags Head Beach, but dogs also love it, and they are welcome year-round as long as they're on a leash under ten-feet long, although some visitors say dogs are allowed off their leash if they are well behaved. The beach also provides waste bags and several trash bins to keep the beach clean and enjoyable for everyone else. There is even an ice cream stand nearby that serves special doggy ice cream treats!
Southwest Nags Head has plenty to explore, and people often choose to explore the beach on four wheels! A great place to do that is at the Oregon Inlet 4 Wheel Drive Beach! Of course, you don't have to explore on four wheels, and you can just enjoy a day relaxing at the beach with your feet in the sand. If you do choose to rent a four-wheeler, there is a fishing center across the street from the beach where you can refill your tires at the end of the day. No matter what you choose to do at the Oregon Inlet Beach, you and your dog are sure to have a blast!
If you want to get a taste of the outdoors in North Carolina and all it has to offer, Jockey's Ridge State Park is the perfect place to do it. There are several trails in this state park, and your dog is welcome to join you on them. You can choose trails that take you to wetlands, beaches, or dunes -- all of which will be fun for you and Rover to explore! There is also a visitor center with a museum and a long boardwalk where you can get excellent views of the dunes and other elements in the area.
Off-leash dog beaches can be hard to find, but luckily there is one just minutes away from Nags Head in north Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Kitty Hawk Off Leash Beach is the perfect spot to let your dog run off-leash in the sand and frolic in the waves, as long as they are under good voice control and stay within 30 feet of their handler. This public beach is popular with both visitors and locals, and people come back year after year to take in the sights and to interact with the friendly people and dogs who frequent it.
The town of Rodanthe, North Carolina is only about 15 minutes away from Nags Head, and this quick trip gets you to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge where your dog can join you, provided they are on a leash. The refuge has beaches, dunes, marshes, and salt flats that are beautiful to look at and fun to explore with your pet. The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge also features over 365 species of birds, 25 species of mammals, 24 reptile species, and five amphibian species. It's safe to say your dog won't be the only four-legged creature you come across during your adventure at this wildlife refuge!
