The isolated community of Saspamco lies southeast of San Antonio. Known for red clay, this area was originally a manufacturing center for sewer pipes and tire products. Today, you and Fido will find a variety of outdoor opportunities in the regions surrounding Saspamco, such as nature parks, paddling trails, and more.
Go on a fishing expedition with your pooch on Calavaras Lake, just five miles north of Saspamco. This reservoir area is known for Red Drum, Catfish, and Largemouth Bass. The public access park includes a picnic area, campsites, and docks.
For a pawtastic adventure, pack up your car and bring Fido to the Medina River Natural Area, located about 22 miles west of Saspamco. Whether you bring along a tent or camper for an overnight or you just want to spend the day exploring the seven miles of trails in this wilderness area, you and your pup are sure to have a great time.
Remember to bring all the supplies you'll need for your adventures in and around Saspamco, including drinking water, doggie waste bags, a leash, treats, and toys. When you want to get out with your pup and enjoy some scenic river travel, bring Fido and your canoe down to Graytown Park, just 3.4 miles south of town. Launch out onto the San Antonio River and take advantage of the Saspamco Paddling Trail. Along the way, you and your furry friend will be able to see a variety of wildlife including hawks and kingfishers. Bring along your rod and reel and fish for bass, catfish, or sunfish. This delightful waterway is lined with a variety of trees to provide you and your furry friend with shade from the hot Texas sun.

To visit a pawtastic park near Saspamco, drive about 3.4 miles east to Calaveras. This small community includes the John William Helton-San Antonio River Nature Park. You can bring Fido here to explore the 98-acre facility. Enjoy the great outdoors as you hike along the nature trail that winds through some natural orchard. You and your canine companion can also walk or jog on the granite trail through the woods and around the meadow. Bring a lunch and have a picnic in the park. Dogs are welcome in the facility and on the trail but must be restrained by a leash.

Drive about 13 miles southeast from Saspamco to TX-97 in the city of Floresville to enjoy a picnic in Floresville River Park with your four-footed companion. Dogs are allowed in the picnic areas and along the trail that loops along the San Antonio River. You'll need to bring your own drinking water and doggie waste bags, since they aren't provided here. Make sure to keep your pup on a leash and to stay in designated areas. After you and Fido stretch your legs, head over to Sonic and share a burger or shake in your car.

Take your pup about three miles northwest of Saspamco to the Borrregas Road neighborhood in Elmendorf. This small suburban community borders Victor Braunig Lake. Here you and Fido can go camping or exploring in Braunig Lake Park along the western shore. This facility has shaded campsites and picnic areas right by the water. Bring your boat and head out on the lake to fish for Bass, Catfish, and Red Drum. On shore, you’ll be able to stretch your legs by wandering through the park areas. Dogs are permitted in the park provided you keep them on a leash up to six feet long and pick up their waste.
McCreless Meadows

For a pupcredible adventure, load your pup in the car and drive about fourteen miles northwest from Saspamco to the neighborhood of McCreless Meadows. This suburban area is located just east of San Antonio Mission Park. Here you and Fido can access the San Antonio Riverwalk that winds along the water and connects the four area missions. There are eight miles of paved paths. Feel free to walk the entire trail for a sixteen mile round trip, or just hike along a portion of the trail. Dogs are welcome to join you on your trek provided you keep them on a leash no longer than six feet.
