How to Groom a Loving Dog

Medium

Introduction

There is nothing like that moment when Lady curls up on the floor at your feet and give you that look. You know, the one that literally melts your heart. Grooming a loving dog like Lady should be fun for both of you. And, it can be if you both approach it from the right direction. Keep in mind that even the most loving of dogs like Lady may not always be comfortable with being groomed, though. It pays to take your time in the early days, at least until she gets used to being groomed. You should also be prepared to groom your dog once a week. Staying in the habit not only keeps them in great shape, it helps keep them familiar and comfortable with the process.

Dog's Perspective

Chances are good that Lady doesn't really care much about being groomed, at least until she gets used to it. But when you have a dog like Lady, the challenge may be getting her to calm down enough to let you groom her. Much of getting a loving dog to let you groom her, is finding ways to keep her occupied while you work.

Step
1
Setting up the grooming room
Gather up the brushes, combs, clippers, shears, and nail cutters you plan to use and place them all in one room. Choose a room that you can use every time to groom Lady. Familiarity and consistency will help make grooming sessions go far more smoothly.
Step
2
Take the long road home
Lady is full of loving energy, much of which can be burned off by taking her for a nice long walk. Let her have time to pee and play around a bit and then take her home so she is nice and tired.
Step
3
Into the grooming room
Bring Lady into the grooming room and give her plenty of time to get used to the room and all of the tools you have laid out.
Step
4
Choose the right brush
Choose the right brush for Lady's coat and start brushing her, working from her head and face down her neck and chest. Take a short break after this and give her a treat along with plenty of praise.
Step
5
On to the rest
Continue on by brushing her back, her sides, rumps, and once you roll her over, her belly and legs. Be gentle around her genitals as this area is very sensitive and easily injured. This is also a great time to give her a good look over for parasites and any signs of injury or skin problems.

Step
1
A little exercise first
Take Lady out for a nice long stroll along her favorite route. Let her go potty, play around a little and burn off some of that loving energy.
Step
2
Excuse me, madam, your bath is ready
Run Lady a nice warm (tepid) bath. Let her gently slide into it and soak for a few minutes before you give her a nice relaxing scrub using her favorite vet-approved shampoo. Make sure you get all the nooks and crannies. Rinse her thoroughly to remove all dirt, debris, parasites, tangles, and small mats.
Step
3
Hold the air and pass the towel
Give Lady a good rub down with a soft towel. Using a hair dryer can scorch Lady's skin if you use one that gets too hot, so better to stick with a towel. Give her a treat to let her know she is doing good.
Step
4
New toys
One way to keep Lady busy while you are trying to groom her is to give her a new toy or two to play with. Give her a treat and tell her she is doing a good job.
Step
5
Something stylish
Time to break out the brush, shears, and clippers. Start with Lady's head and face, take extra care in these areas as you could make Lady flinch. Brush over her back, her sides, and rump. Once again, pay very close attention to being gentle around her "privates" as she probably won't enjoy this part. Take your time, use lots of treats, and make grooming fun for both of you. In time, Lady will come to thoroughly enjoy the experience every time.

Caution & Considerations

  • Use your dog's loving behavior to your advantage, it can make grooming a lot more fun for both of you.
  • Make sure you give your dog plenty of time to get used to all the tools you plan to use. This will also make grooming more pleasant for both of you.
  • Take her for a nice long stroll to help burn off some of that extra loving energy.
  • Keep the blades on both shears and clippers nice and sharp to avoid snagging any hair.
  • Use new toys as they are likely to keep her more occupied than her old toys.
  • Don't be stingy with the treats, just make sure you use healthy treats.

Conclusion

Lady just wants to keep spreading her love, but there are times when it can be a bit too much, such as grooming. Work with her, keep her distracted with a toy or treat if she starts to fuss, and stay consistent. Soon you will both be relaxing and enjoying the weekly grooming session.
