Ashland sits aside the mighty Ohio River and is the largest city in Boyd County, Kentucky. It is a great place to hang out with your furry friend, with many scenic walks, parks to play at and nearby pup-friendly places – you are both sure to have a pawsome time here. And with six veterinarians in town, your pup can feel safe.

For a nice local trail walk, seek out the Charles and Betty Russel Park Trails. This series of trails within the city offers great views of downtown and out into the river. The trails are well-marked and maintained for easy navigation and are a great way to find your feet and get out and about in Ashland. Keep your pup leashed here for his safety and the comfort of other trail users.

Central Park is the green jewel of Ashland, the largest of the local park system and well worth checking out while you are in town. Set over 47 acres close to the city centre, Central Park features walking paths, plenty of open space, and even an off-leash area for your pup to enjoy! Your family will also love the recreational amenities here, such as the tennis courts, ball fields, horse shoe courts, concession stand and playground.

If you are hungry after your outing, head to the pet-friendly Jolly Pirate Donuts for a delicious, freshly baked treat and hot cup of coffee. For something savoury, take a seat at one of Donatos Pizza’s outdoor tables and enjoy a slice with your favourite topping.

There are many more things to see and do around Ashland, so grab the lead and head out for a puptastic adventure!

Pop your pup on a lead at Riverfront Park at the Port of Ashland and take a stroll along the paved path stretching along the river. This park is a welcome green space between the water and the railroad tracks, offering scenic views of the bridge, boats floating by and trains travelling past. There are several large murals close by to seek out, and an old rail carriage on display to have a closer look at. Benches are dotted along the park for a rest stop. Keep your pooch leashed along here as it is not safe for wandering pets due to the traffic and trains. Always have a stash of cleanup bags on you while you are out and about.

Clyffeside Park is another local green space where you can bring your pet for a walk and a play. This area was once home to a popular trolley park, complete with regular concerts, boxing matches, a swimming pool and ball field. While those facilities have sadly closed, Clyffeside Park still represents an important piece of history for Ashland. Paved paths through the park and into surrounding streets offer an easy stroll as you spend time on the riverfront. There are plenty of shady trees here to relax under for a bite to eat, as well as enough open space to enjoy a game of catch or Frisbee with your mate.

Armco Park is a beautiful place to check out in Ashland, but is extra special for dog owners as there is a free dedicated pooch play area to check out too! Agility equipment is provided in both of the fenced areas, divided by dog size to ensure your pet is safe. There are benches situated within the play area for you to relax and supervise from. There isn’t any water here, so bring your own and a drinking bowl for your pup. Outside the dog park, there are several paved walking paths to take an on-lead stroll along, and open green space to sprawl out on for a picnic.

Just north of Ashland is Coal Grove, where you will find a pleasant little park known as Paul Porter Park. There is a paved path around the park for an easy walk with your pup and lots of shady trees to enjoy when the weather is warm. The kids will enjoy the playground while you take a walk or relax on the grass under the shady trees. Pack yourself a picnic and spread out on the grass, or seek out the pavilion and picnic tables. As this is a public park, you will need to keep your pet leashed while you enjoy the green space, and always have a few waste disposal bags handy.

Perched on the junction of three states - Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia - and on the confluence of the Ohio and Big Sandy Rivers, the Virginia Point Park is certainly an interesting place to visit! The park offers scenic views over the water and nearby hills, with plenty of open grassed space to enjoy and a paved path to take a walk along with your pooch. There is a swing set for the kids and fishing is permitted for those who like to throw a line in. Your dog will love visiting here with you, but keep him leashed at all times and bring your waste disposal bags as well as water for you both.
