Cumming, Georgia may be small, but it is the only city in Forsyth County that is inhabited. The town was named after Colonel William Cumming. There are almost 1,300 dogs living in Cumming, so they have plenty of dog-friendly things to do. The Bowman’s Island Trail is a popular hiking spot for dog-lovers, with 4 ½ miles of looping trail that follows the Chattahoochee River on the wooded riverbank. You can view the island from the trail going into the thick Georgia forest where you may see deer, raccoons, hawks, herons, osprey, beaver, and muskrat. You can also see the Buford Trout Hatchery and a covered bridge from the 1900s.

Another great place to take Fido is Fowler Park, which has 85-acres with ball fields, tennis, basketball, walking trails, playgrounds, and a dog park. The Big Creek Greenway starts here, and you can take your furbaby on the seven-mile hike, but watch out for black bears that have been sighted in the area.

Caney Creek Preserve is another dog-lovers’ park with trails, pavilions, a playground with an archeological dig and water play. The trail takes you alongside the creek with informational signs about the wildlife, creek, forest, and the ecology. The 63-acre park has so much to do you will need to come back often. Enjoy your stay in Cumming, Georgia.
