Culturally rich and conveniently located, Hanover Park, IL definitely welcomes wagging tails with open arms. Just within commuting distance of Chicago, the area manages to maintain a village feel, even with a population of nearly 40,000. Hanover Park is well known for its diversity and many community events. Visit in July and you and your pooch can enjoy a movie together in the park! There’s a veterinary clinic in the village to take good care of your buddy, and an out-of-hours emergency service just a short drive away in Schamburg.

As Hanover Park has the youngest residents of any Chicago, it makes sense that it’s easy to find athletic entertainment for your pup! The Illinois Prairie Path trail surrounds the neighborhood, and the city has its own dog park. If you’re willing to drive a little, you’ll find a plethora of further off- and on-leash exercise options in the surrounding area. Keep in mind that many dog parks in the area require membership, but plenty of others are accessible with an easily obtained permit. However, there are no doggie dining options in Hanover Park -- you and your pooch will have to roam a little fur-ther afield to find somewhere to chow down!

There’s trails for walking and plenty of green space for playing catch, but be warned -- some of the vegetation can be dangerous, so keep an eye on your pup if they tend to chew everything in sight! This Illinois staple stocks the best in terms of treats for your pet, from healthy bites to dog bagels to biscotti! For food suitable for humans, check out Salsa 17 on Campbell Street. A local favorite, this restaurant serves up some of the best Mexican food in the area, and permits doggie diners at outside tables. Afterwards, why not take an after-dinner stroll around Harmony Park? This small but charming green space welcomes pets on leash, and hosts open air music events during the summer months.

For fur-friendly hiking, look no further than Mallard Lake County Forest Preserve, where dogs are welcome on-leash. Beloved by local dog owners, bird-watchers and wildflower spotters alike, the preserve features some of the most peaceful scenery the area has to offer, and there’s a trail for every ability. Just remember to bring your own water and dog bags, and it’s a good idea to look up a trail map before you go. A lot of the trails aren’t signposted, and it’s easy for the unwary to get lost!
