If you don’t have the time to go into the depths of the Acadia National Park, Mount Desert has its share of small urban parks too! In the Hall Quarry neighborhood of Mount Desert, you can find the Suminsby Park. This park offers views of the Somes Sound, and has particularly spectacular sunsets. Amenities include picnic areas, grills, a volleyball court and porta potties. Leashed dogs are welcome as long as they are picked up after! If you’re looking for somewhere to spend the night, check out the Somes Sound View Campground. This peaceful retreat along the Somes Sound welcomes leashed dogs as long as they follow proper petiquette! All sites have picnic tables and fire pits, and modern restrooms are available.

Northeast Harbor

In the Northeast Harbor neighborhood, you and your pupper can find a great way to explore the surrounding nature. Get your sea legs ready, because the Sea Princess Scenic Nature Cruise welcomes leashed dogs aboard! From this cruise you can enjoy views of the Bear Island Lighthouse, and watch the harbor seals and osprey. Trips are narrated by a ranger from Acadia National Park. The cruise also features a stopover on Little Cranberry Island, where Fido can stretch his paws and you can explore this 200 year old lobster fishing village. Seal Harbor

Head down into the neighborhood of Seal Harbor to access the privately owned Little Long Pond Leash Free Area. This area has large rolling meadows, a pond to swim in, and a variety of hiking trails. Be careful though, because this are is not fenced in! For a unique way to enjoy the area, check out Carriages of Acadia, also in the neighborhood of Seal Harbor. They offer dog-friendly, horse-drawn carriage excursions. Here you can travel down the historic roads of Acadia with your furry friend, while enjoying mountain vistas, remarkable bridges and views of the Cranberry Isles.

Otter Creek

The neighborhood of Otter Creek is located in the southeast corner of Mount Desert, and offers some great hiking opportunities that you and you pup can enjoy. It’s from this neighborhood that you can reach the Cadillac South Ridge Trailhead. This trail is a 3.5 mile gentle climb to the top of Cadillac Mountain, reaching 1530 feet above sea level. From this mountain you can enjoy sweeping views of coastal Maine and Mount Desert Island. If you get there early enough in the day between the months of October and March, you and your dog will be some of the firsts to see the sunrise in the United States. Leashed dogs are welcome to enjoy the trail with their families.

Bar Harbor City Center

Just a 20 minute drive from Mount Desert brings you into the City Center of Bar Harbor. From here you can catch the free, pet friendly, Island Express! This shuttle bus brings you and your dog to some of the most pawpular areas on Mount Desert Island, including the Acadia National Park, along Loop Road, and to the Jordan Pond House. When you need some refreshment after, head over to Beer Works, also located in the Bar Harbor City Center. This restaurant welcomes dogs on the spacious outdoor patio, and offers delicious burgers, lobster, craft beer and more.
