The best dog friendly neighborhoods in Boothbay

Boothbay

Boothbay is the home of several nature preserves that welcome dogs, off-leash, to explore with their humans. At the Ovens Mouth Preserve, the only restraint needed is voice control, so Fido can walk freely nearby while you both take in the views of salt marshes and quiet coves, along with the wildlife and greenery. Covering two peninsulas, the preserve invites you to feast your eyes on osprey and eagles, otters and other small mammals as you cross the bridge connecting the two sections of the preserve. Or walk the looped trail of the Appalachee Preserve Trail, with acres of marshes and wetlands containing waterfowl like egrets and cormorants. The Pine Tree and Zak Preserves round out the list of mainland Boothbay’s off-leash preserves that will thrill your fur-baby and entertain you with their natural resources. Furbulous fun!

Barter's Island

Barter’s Island is the Boothbay neighborhood where you’ll find the Schoolhouse Pond Preserve, a 42-acre piece of land with a 2-mile looped trail through the forest, featuring rock formations, wildflowers and a magnificent stone wall. And of course, Schoolhouse Pond, which is really a cranberry bog! The trail has 4 separate loops that intersect several times, making customizing your walk almost limitless. Fido can be off-leash in this preserve, under voice control. A wider, multi-use trail that runs down the center of the island is the route to the Pond and accommodates cross-country skiing in the winter. Some of the walk is steep, so keep that in mind when planning your hike with your furry bestie and be sure to grab a map at the trailhead so you can plan your route. The trails are well-marked, but the intersections can be confusing. This is a fine place for a walk with your furry bestie!

Boothbay Harbor

Boothbay Harbor is a town on the coast, just south of Boothbay, that is a popular tourist destination whose population balloons in the summer with summer residents and visitors. Besides the sightseeing the town has to offer, it abounds with places to take your fur-pup to share a meal with you! A favorite is Boathouse Bistro, where your enjoyment of the menu is enhanced by lovely views of the harbor from the top deck. After lunch, be sure to venture out for some exercise in one of the town’s preserves. Try nearby Lobster Cove Preserve, almost 50 acres of wetlands, fields and forest where scores of butterflies descend on the fields’ wildflowers every spring and summer. Truly a delight for the senses, and a way to work off some of that pawsome lunch!

Newcastle

To the northeast of Boothbay lies Newcastle, home to the Dodge Point Public Reserved Land, a 500-acre piece of land with frontage along the Damariscotta River. The preserve features secluded pocket beaches and scenery, as well as a 6-mile hiking network distributed on 4 main trails that are easy to moderate loops. The 1.5-mile Shore Trail is one of the easier ones, following the flat shores of the river. Fur-pups can be unleashed in this park, and under voice control, so when this trail leads to a sandy or pebble beach, the water may be too irresistible for him, and you! Significant populations of raptors and other birds can be seen from the shore, and this is a perfect spot for fishing or picnicking, as well. Woofderful!

Georgetown

Georgetown, to the west of Boothbay, is home to the Weber Kelly Preserve, a wooded, dog-friendly park. Its mixed woods growth is bordered by a salt marsh at Sagadahoc Bay, and because of the presence of many fish seeking the shelter of the marsh, it is also populated by fish-eating ducks, herons and egrets. This is truly a visual smorgasbord for you and your furry bestie. Open year-round from dawn to dusk, it features a pawrrific 2-mile moderately challenging trail that will lead you into the forest and loop you back out. A kiosk at the trail-head offers information and maps. Free parking is at the entrance on Bay Point Road. Furbulous!
