Southport is a small island town located on the Sheepscot River in Maine. To reach Southport by car, you and Fido will need to cross a swing bridge from Boothbay Harbor. You won't find any crowds or big-city amenities in this rural coastal community, and the nearest animal hospital to the island is 7 miles away in the town of Boothbay.

The Hendricks Head Preserve is a dog-friendly spot where you and your best friend can enjoy the natural beauty of coastal Maine. Go for a leisurely stroll, look for shells, and admire the lighthouse on Hendricks Head Beach. Just a stone's throw from the beach you'll find the Hendricks Head Hiking Trail. This easy, half-mile trail winds through a pine forest, with moss carpets and quartz-filled rocks on either side of it.

If you plan to stay on the island for a few days, the Gray Homestead Ocean Campground offers 40 pet-friendly, full hookup RV sites. As a guest, you'll have access to a private beach with puptacular views of the ocean. Two well-behaved pets are allowed per site and they must remain leashed at all times.

If you want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city with your pup, then Southport is the place to be!

The Thorpe Preserve houses two trails: one will take you and your pooch to a protected beach on the Boothbay Harbor side, while the other will lead you up a hill overlooking Townsend Gut and the Southport Bridge. Both trails are short, but the latter is more challenging due to its steepness.
