You may also see Atlantic Salmon fighting their way upstream from the ocean almost 50 miles away. Be sure to keep your fur buddy on leash as he may get distracted by some of the other anglers or wildlife in the area. Bone appetit! When you've had enough fishing for the day, grab a paddle board or kayak, help Fido aboard, and have a gentle paddle around Freeman Lake at sunset. Drum Hill Rd/ North Rd
This neighborhood in the town of Chelmsford is home to the Chelmsford Dog Park, also called the North Chelmsford Dog Park by some. In fact, there is a sign for each of these different names on the fence. Developed and managed by the Chelmsford Dog Association, the roomy 2-acre park is completely fenced and safety-gated, with separate areas for large and small dogs. Drinking water is provided, except in the winter when the ground freezes. A pavilion with a picnic table and benches provide shelter for the humans minding and enjoying their dogs while they socialize and exercise in this grassy space. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk. Waste bags and containers are not provided, so be sure to bring your own.

Chelmsford Town Center
The town of Chelmsford is host to the dog-friendly, 67-acre Lime Quarry Reservation, which in the 1700s and 1800s was a source for the lime that was mixed into plaster for the walls of homes in Chelmsford and nearby Lowell. There are still many remnants of the quarries and kilns, and the area also features a trail that passes among them, through and over stone walls, and to an area of wetlands where many waterfowl and other wildlife live. This is a dog-friendly attraction, but your buddy must remain on his leash. The entrance to the trail is at the parking area on Littleton Road, and it passes through wooded areas and an open meadow. To make the adventure even more interesting, there is a rock walkway that can be challenging, and wooden bridges across streams through the woods. Woof-derful!

South Chelmsford
The Russell Mill Pond and Town Forest is in the Chelmsford neighborhood of South Chelmsford. This 132 acres is densely wooded, and features 3000 feet of shoreline along Russell Mill Pond. Dog-friendly for leashed fur-pups, this park boasts an extensive trail network perfect for walking, and a bike path for the mountain cyclists. If your goal is to romp or just relax with your canine companion, there is a large open area, and the shores of the pond are full of things to see and sniff! Also in this neighborhood is Thanksgiving Ground Forest, a 45-acre town forest that has frontage on Russell Mill Pond as well, and is an access point for water-based recreation such as canoeing and kayaking. Walking trails crisscross the Forest and feature massive stone boulders and outcroppings to challenge any climber, including Fido.

West Chelmsford
The Bruce Freeman Rail Trail, currently under construction, has opened its 7-mile Phase 1 section from Lowell Center through Chelmsford into Westford, MA. This paved, dog-friendly trail is open to non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles and skis, as well as being perfect for jogging, walking and rollerblading. Its path passes through woodlands and alongside Heart Pond in Chelmsford. It also passes by Gary’s Ice Cream, the perfect spot to stop for a “cold one” and some water with your pup. When completed, the entire trail from Lowell to Framingham will stretch 25 miles. There are access points, complete with restrooms and drinking water, along the route. Paw-rrific!
