The city of Midway in Gadsden County, Florida, located just a 12-mile journey from Tallahassee, is a small and compact locale with just over 3,000 people in residence. Thanks to its close proximity to the state capital, it isn’t too difficult to find whatever you’re looking for to suit you and your pet nearby. Whether you are looking for walking trails, pet-friendly eateries, accommodation, or pet care, it can all be found without having to travel too far.
There are plenty of outdoor adventures to choose from, all just a comfortable distance from the center of Midway. If you’re looking for an enclosed area to explore with your furry friend, a 20-minute car ride from Midway will take you to San Luis Mission Dog Park in Tallahassee, a fenced park for your peace of mind.
If you’re looking for a pawesome treat to cool down with for you and your pet after a day’s activity, head over to Bruster’s Real Ice Cream shop on W. Tharpe Street and get a “pup-cup” specifically made for your furry friend!
While Midway is a relatively small city, it boasts the benefit of having only pet-friendly inns and hotels, with The Howard Johnson Inn, The Comfort Inn and The Country Inn and Suites to choose from. This makes Midway the pawfect place to stay if you’re looking to visit Tallahassee, but don’t want to stay in the hustling and bustling big city.
Hop in the car, and in just under twenty minutes from the center of Midway, you will find yourself in the Los Robles neighborhood in nearby Tallahassee. Just across the street from this quiet, suburban neighborhood, you will find the popular, and pet-friendly, area of Lake Ella. An idyllic and bustling destination for walkers, joggers and pet owners, this lakeside park allows you to bring your furry pal along to enjoy the view and fresh air, too. You can bring them right along the edge of the water to explore; just be sure to bring a leash.
Tallahassee’s All Saints neighborhood is just 13 miles from Midway. Here, you’ll find the Proof Brewing Company, a dog-friendly bar! While you can’t bring your furry friend indoors, you will be more than welcome to chill with them in the outdoor seating area, a perfect place to have a drink in the sunshine. If you’re looking for some food, you can take your pet with you and head to Merv’s Melt Shop, a pet-friendly establishment serving up lunches and desserts, and also their own homemade potato chips!
If you’re looking for some exercise and want to take on a hiking trail with your furry sidekick, you can travel just south of the Countryside of Tallahassee neighborhood via the 1-10 E from Midway and explore the JR Alford Greenway. The entire trail network stretches over 800 acres, and the greenway even includes a lake and forested areas, so make sure to give yourself enough time to drink in all of the scenic views on offer! The trails are shared with other humans and animals, so a leash is required if you’re planning to bring your dog along for an adventure.
If you’re looking to do some shopping while you’re in the area, we have some great news! You can take your four-legged friend with you to Bass Pro Shops in Tallahassee’s Perkins neighborhood. Twenty minutes in your car along the 1-10 E from Midway will take you to your one-stop shop for all the outdoor gear you might need to explore all of the parks and walking trails near Midway. You can even take your pet to shop alongside you, as the establishment is dog-friendly. (Be sure to bring a leash, though.) The lovely staff will even throw in a dog treat for your pet!
Just across the way from the intersection of Mahan Drive and Walden Road, which is part of one of the most family-friendly areas in Florida, you’ll find the perfect indoor attraction to enjoy with your pet on a rainy day. The Tallahassee Automobile Museum is just 20 minutes from Midway and is an interesting and informative place to visit if you’re looking to learn about the surrounding area. It’s free for children under the age of 4, and is open 7 days a week. Dogs are permitted to come along and visit the exhibit also; just be sure to bring a leash, and a doggie bag just in case of a clean-up!
