The city of Elgin is home to several dog parks. Two local favorites are Bo's Run and Freedom Run Dog Parks. Both parks are open every day from dawn to dusk, offering small dog play areas, agility equipment, waste bags, picnic tables, and water fountains. These parks are members-only parks, but if you're looking for a free park, try the Schweitzer Woods Forest Preserve. This park is completely fenced-in with a separate small dog area, surrounded by woods and trails.

The area is also home to several hiking options, many of them established by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy program, that converts old rail lines to walkable trails. A local favorite is the Fox River Trail, offering gorgeous scenery and lots of wildlife.

Another option is the Illinois Prairie Path, was founded over sixty years ago. This trail was created from the CA&E (Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin) rail line. With over 61 miles of path to explore, and seven free access points to park at in Elgin, this trail is sure to be a hit.
