Pelham
Directly adjacent to Shutesbury is the small town of Pelham, where you will find some pawriffic dog walks. The largest green area in Pelham is the 136 acre Harkness Conservation Area, which boasts 1.7 miles of marked trails for you and Fido to follow. There is also quite a unique natural feature in Pelham, and this is the spectacular Buffam Falls. To reach the falls, you will need to follow a trail, of which there are a few to choose from, each varying in length. Once at the falls, you will see three main cascades, as well as several smaller ones, providing you with a picture-perfect vista.

Market Hill
Market Hill in Amherst is right next to Shutesbury, and this is a neighborhood that your pooch will definitely love. This is where you will find the Beaver Pond Conservation Area, which encompasses wetlands, woodlands and a large pond that is great for fishing in. This neighborhood also provides access to the Eastman Brook Conservation Area, which is home to similar habitats, but with more walking trails. If you and Fido would like to spend the night, primitive camping is allowed in this park, so long as you set up more than 50 feet from a stream, and stay for no longer than two nights.

High Point
Directly adjacent to Shutesbury is the Amherst neighborhood of High Point, and there are a couple of conservation areas here worth exploring. The first is the Flat Hills Conservation Area, where you will find 64 acres of grassy hills and woodlands to check out. The marked hiking trail here is just under a mile long, and there are also several unmarked trails branching off from this, making it easy to spend hours here. High Point also provides access to the Haskins Meadow Conservation Area, which sprawls out for 24 acres and boasts even more rugged wilderness for you and Fido to hike through.

Wendell
The Wendell neighborhood of Wendell is less than a mile from Shutesbury, and this is a journey worth making because this neighborhood is home to the Wendall State Forest. The forest covers 7566 acres of land, with everything from forested hills to tranquil ponds just waiting to be explored. The forest also boasts a baseball diamond, a picnic area, a boat ramp, a pavilion, and a tail-wagging network of paved hiking trails. These connect on to smaller dirt trails, making it easy for you and Fido to spend the entire day walking here. While dogs are allowed in the forest, a lead is essential.

Amherst
Less than a mile away from Shutesbury is the Amherst neighborhood of Amherst, which lies at the heart of town. Although this is quite a busy neighborhood, there are several pockets of greenery here, such as the Mill River Recreation Area, which connects up to a larger green belt. The park boasts several sports facilities, picnic areas, a playground, and a swimming pool, as well as a few small hiking trails that will take you to the longer Mill River Conservation Trails. If you and your pooch would prefer a shorter walk, Fraternity Park is located near the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and is home to a dense patch of woodland that your pup will love.
