About 3 miles southwest of Bethesda, and 8 miles northwest of Washington, DC, Glen Echo is a tiny town nestled on a bend of the Potomac River. It is known for its involvement in the Chautauqua movement, and for being the residence of American Red Cross founder Clara Barton in her later years. There are no veterinary hospitals in Glen Echo, but dog parents can still travel around town worry-free as the nearest facility is only a mile away in nearby Cabin John.
One of the town's most popular destinations, Glen Echo Park, has been serving the community for over 120 years. A former national Chautauqua and amusement park, it is now a national park offering cultural and recreational activities all year round. As you take your pup for a leisurely stroll around the park, you will walk past several historic structures, including the Spanish Ballroom, Dentzel Carousel, and Bumper Car Pavilion.
Not far from Glen Echo Park is the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Lock 7, which serves as one of the many access points to the 185-mile historic towpath. Bring your best friend along for a relaxing walk along the Potomac River, and remember to keep them on a 6-foot leash at all times.
A pawsome small-town adventure awaits you and your furry pal in Glen Echo!
A short 3-minute drive from Glen Echo, the Cabin John Park in the neighboring community of Cabin John is great for going on serene hikes with your pupper. Follow the nature trails into the woods, where you will discover a creek flowing through it. Let your pooch cool off in the water while you soak up the peace and quiet. If all that hiking leaves you hungry, head to Wild Tomato to grab a bite. Located about a mile from the Cabin John Park, this American bistro welcomes four-legged patrons in the outdoor dining area, complete with treats and water bowls.
Tucked in a residential area, the Merrimac Park in nearby Bethesda is only a quick 6-minute drive from Glen Echo. This 10-acre park features a playground, multi-use field, basketball court, and tennis courts. While there are no walking paths, there areplenty of grassy areas for your pup to enjoy. Surrounding trees provide generous shade, making Merrimac a nice place to relax and hang out with your doggo. There are no pooch-friendly eateries within walking distance, so bring snacks that you and Fido can munch on at the picnic table next to the basketball court. Parking shouldn't be a problem as visitors say there are ample spots.
Located in the adjacent community of Bethesda, Woodacres Park is a great place for Fido to meet new friends. While not exactly a dog park, this 10-acre site is frequented by local pups and their humans thanks to its spacious multi-use field. There's also a picnic area where you and your pooch can share a packed lunch when the weather is nice. Other features that can be found on-site are a playground, basketball court, baseball field, tennis courts, and softball fields. The Woodacres Park is just 5 minutes by car from Glen Echo and right next to the Wood Acres Elementary School.
Being in the Potomac Palisades Conservation Park will make you feel like you're out in the country, even though it's only 1.6 miles from Glen Echo. Situated on the banks of the Potomac River in neighboring Bethesda, this 5-acre park remains undeveloped since it is dedicated to environmental preservation. You and Fido can access the Potomac Palisades at the end of a residential street. Enjoy the natural environment and breathe in the fresh air as you take a leashed walk along the river. Because the park is home to various wildlife, you and your pup may encounter squirrels, hawks, raccoons, and other animals while you're there.
This neighborhood in nearby Bethesda is home to two parks where you and your best friend can spend a beautiful afternoon. Winding trails, grassy areas, and shady trees make the Westmoreland Hills Park a furrific place to go for a walk and get some exercise with Fido. This 10-acre park also houses a picnic area, playground, athletic fields, and Battery Bailey, a man-made hill that was built during the Civil War. The nearby Willard Avenue Park, though smaller than Westmoreland, offers opportunities for active recreation as well. You and your pooch will find a walking path with fitness equipment and a bridge crossing over a creek at this 5-acre site.
