Camden, New Jersey sits just across the Delaware River from the spectacular city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Camden itself doesn’t offer much in the way of dog-friendly activities and places, aside from a veterinary clinic within the city. But it is the home of Farnham Park, a pupular spot that allows leashed dogs to enjoy the pretty surroundings and adventurous trails. Camden also sits near some very paw-friendly locations, like the city of Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is only a few miles from Camden and is one of the most historic parts of the United States. And the city offers several ways for you and your pooch to explore some of the nation’s best historical monuments and spots together. Free and Friendly Tours gives you and Rover a chance to explore the city and its history with a variety of tour options, some of which welcome dogs. The Constitutional Walking Tour allows dogs to join you as you explore the Liberty Bell and other famous monuments that help tell the story of the United States becoming what it is today.
You can also head to Pennsauken or Blackwood, two other towns in New Jersey, if you’re looking for some paw-friendly opportunities away from the city.
Queen Village in Philadelphia is 8.3 miles from Camden, and is the home of Mario Lanza Dog Park, a park that gives you and Fido a little break from the city. The fenced-in park has shady trees and a relaxing atmosphere that help bring nature into the city while giving your pup a chance to play and socialize. This neighborhood also has the Philly Aids Thrift store, which offers clothes at discount prices and allows well-behaved dogs to join you as you shop. You can also try one of several dog-friendly restaurants in Queen Village, like New Wave Café, which serves up good old American favorites.
Washington Square West is a neighborhood in Philadelphia that sits 9.1 miles away from Camden. This neighborhood is where you’ll find the famous Philadelphia Magic Gardens, an amazing indoor and outdoor art gallery and arts center that allows leashed dogs to join their owners for an unforgettable experience. Seger Dog Park is also in Washington Square West, and this park is sure to become a favorite. The mulched, fenced-in park has shady trees, spots of sun, and benches for owners. When bellies start to growl, head to Mixto for some Latin favorites and grab an outdoor table with your dog.
Center City Philadelphia is where you’ll find tons of the country’s best historical spots, and it’s only 7.1 miles from Camden. Philadelphia by Foot is a touring company that has some dog-friendly tours for leashed pups and their owners. Here, you can take a tour of some of Philadelphia’s best artsy spots, get scared on a ghost tour, or focus on some incredible U.S. history. Your dog can also get his buns in shape with the K9 Fit Club Philadelphia, which offers workouts designed to keep your pup healthy and having fun. And you’re even welcome to join your dog in his workouts to get yourself in shape, too!
Pennsauken Township, NJ, is about 4.4 miles from Camden, and can give you and your dog a bit of a different experience than you’ll get in the busy streets of Philadelphia. The Cooper River Dog Park is here, which is an off-leash area of the larger Cooper River Park. Your leashed pup can also join you in the main park, which has several sporting fields, a track, a sculpture garden, and more. Bow Wow Park is another dog park you can try out, which has separate areas for small and large dogs. Or, head to the Merchantville Bike Path, a dog-friendly trail that is less than a mile long, giving you the perfect spot to take your pooch out for some quick exercise.
About 13 miles from Camden is Chews Landing in Blackwood, NJ. The Timber Creek Dog Park is a pawfect place for an outdoor adventure, with nine acres of space, all fenced in. And, there’s even a small lake here that your dog can splash around in to cool off on hot summer days. You can also explore Timber Creek Park with your leashed dog, which has some trails, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, and more. Chews Landing is also the home of the Blackwood Railroad Trail, a part of the Rails-to-Trails Organization. This trail is almost three miles long and gives you and your pooch a good spot to enjoy the outdoors.
