Beckley is well-known for the Appalachian arts and crafts exhibits in Tamarack, and for the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine which preserves the history of coal mining in the area, but it is also a wonderful family and Fido-friendly town with activities for you and your pup. When your pup is due for his annual checkup, there are three veterinarian clinics in Beckley offering routine appointments and emergency care.
Located near the Coal Mine, New River Park is perfect when your pooch needs to stretch his legs. You can walk along the trails and let Fido sniff the flowers or roll around in the grass while the kids hang out at the playground. You can also relax at one of the picnic tables and refill your pup’s water bottle at the drinking fountain.
If you and Fido are feeling hungry, head over to the Chocolate Moose Coffee for a latte or smoothie and enjoy the morning with your pup at the outdoor tables. You can also check out Foster’s Main Street Tavern where you can grab a cold drink and a sandwich on the outdoor patio. If you are looking for a more upscale dining experience, plan a date night with you and your pup at Pasquale’s where you will enjoy Italian cuisine at the outdoor seating.
If you need pup-friendly accommodations in town, the Howard Johnson Express welcomes two pets of any size for an extra fee.

About 23 miles north of Beckley, enjoy a day of hiking with your pup on The Thurmond-Minden Trail. This is part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy project, and follows one of the abandoned railroad lines. You need to head right on East Main Street in Oak Hill and park in the lot to access the trail. You and your pup will cross over numerous bridges where you can admire the amazing scenery. This well-maintained trail is easy to hike, and if you keep going towards the east, you will see the old mining community of Minden.
