North Tazewell
Cavitt’s Creek Park is located in nearby North Tazewell, which is a unique neighborhood of Tazewell that has its own zip code. The park here features a well-maintained hiking path where you can spend time with Fido. The nature trail is about three miles and follows along the creek and lake. You and your pup can stroll along the path or sit on the banks of the water and cast a line for fishing. There is a variety of wildlife in the area, so be sure to keep your pup on his leash. If you are feeling adventurous, there are primitive camping sites where you can spend the night and a playground where the kids can run around and get rid of excess energy.

Burkes Garden
About 14 miles east of Tazewell, Burke’s Garden was formed from limestone caverns that eventually collapsed. The valley is surrounded by mountains and features amazing views where you and Fido can spend the day walking along the paths. You will be amazed by the beautiful barn quilts scattered through the area, and you can either hike with your pup or ride in the car with the windows down enjoying the fresh air. Plan to stop at the Mill Dam and walk or bike the 12-mile loop along the rolling hills. You can even check out the cemetery of the Central Lutheran Church with headstones dating back to the 1700’s.

Pocahontas
The town of Pocahontas is only 25 minutes north east of Tazewell and is situated in a beautiful area of the Appalachian Mountains. The Pocahontas ATV Resort is located on the outskirts of town and features clean and comfortable pet-friendly cabins, giving you a good base camp to hike or ride through the Laurel Fork or Bluestone River Trails. There are over 600 miles of trails found here with easy terrain for families and more rugged terrain for adventurous individuals wanting to explore more of the mountains. The breathtaking scenery will impress even the most seasoned outdoorsmen, and Fido will have a blast among all the plants and trees. Just remember to bring some doggie waste bags and fill your cooler with water bottles for a fun day out in nature.

Downtown Cedar Bluff
Cedar Bluff is 15 miles west of Tazewell and provides wonderful access to the Clinch River. You and your pup can walk down to the old grist mill site and go wading in the creek. While strolling through the area, you can admire the large variety of wildflowers and Fido can roll around in the tall grass. The Cedar Bluff Overlook Trail is perfect if you want to get up close with nature, just be sure to keep your pup on a leash. During the Autumn months, you will be astounded by the beautiful foliage and you can plan a picnic at one of the shelters. There is a playground and bathrooms in the park where you can relax after finishing the trail.
Bastian
When traveling about 25 miles east of Tazewell along Interstate 77 South from Rocky Gap to Wytheville – you will want to stop at the Rocky Gap Safety Rest Area and Welcome Center. The area not only offers clean restrooms, but you can also take advantage of the pet area and there is a hiking trail through the grounds. If you need a destination with plenty of parking, the rest area is great for a quick BBQ with grills and picnic tables. You can spend some time letting Fido and his furry friends stretch their legs while admiring the mountain views before heading back out on the road.
