Situated on Trestle Road, the Ivanhoe Horse Show Grounds and Camp Ground is perfect for a getaway with Fido and the family. You can bring your pooch and your horses, and spend time hiking or riding along the nature trails. The campground offers clean bathrooms with showers, and a place to pitch your tent. Exploring the area along the New River will give your pup a chance to run around and splash in the water. Just be sure to bring some doggie waste bags and keep your pooch on a leash. Fido will have a furtastic time socializing with other pups and getting some exercise.

Austinville
About six miles northeast of Ivanhoe, the Austin Memorial State Park offers some history about Stephen F. Austin or the “Father of Texas.” The park features an amazing hiking trail through the mountains where your pup can sniff all the plants and trees. You can relax at one of the picnic tables and enjoy a snack while admiring the beautiful views. The area is just minutes from the interstate, so it is perfect to let your pup get out and stretch his legs after a long trip. Looking out over the mountains and learning about local history offers a great distraction when visiting the area.

Max Meadows
Thirteen miles east of Ivanhoe, the New River Trail State Park is located in Max Meadows. The park covers about 57 miles, and features a hiking trail that follows along an abandoned railroad track. You and Fido will love the scenic views, and your pup can roll around in the grass or have a snifftastic time in the trees. The park is also used for biking and horseback riding, so be sure to keep your pooch on a leash. There are camping areas throughout the park where you can relax at one of the picnic tables when you need to rest with a cold bottle of water. When hiking in the spring and summer, you can take pictures of your pup in the wildflowers while enjoying the fresh air and exercise.

Carter’s Park in Fort Chiswell is just ten miles north of Ivanhoe. The park features a duck pond where you and your pup can stroll and admire the beautiful scenery. When spending time in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Chestnut Creek Cabins are pup-friendly, and located in Galax just fifteen miles south of Ivanhoe. Near the cabins, you can access the New River hiking trails where you and Fido can explore the natural areas. You will also enjoy the fishing pond whether you can throw a line in, or just stroll around the perimeter admiring the views. When staying in the cabins you will enjoy comfortable beds that are clean and the rooms are convenient to bathrooms. Just bring Fido’s dog bed and you will feel right at home. If you want to go out to eat while staying at the campground, head over to the Creek Bottom Brews or Scoots Restaurant which are both pup-friendly.
