Save on pet insurance for your pet

You don't have to choose between your pet and your wallet when it comes to expensive vet visits. Prepare ahead of time for unexpected vet bills by finding the pawfect pet insurance.

Published: 9/10/2021

Picking the "pawfect" pet health insurance plan for Fido can cause a few headaches, especially if you're working with a tight budget. And with plenty of technical jargon to consider, like deductible, pre-existing conditions, and waiting periods, it can be tricky to know which pet health insurance provider is giving you the most bang for your buck.

Before scouring the web for pet insurance, it's worth noting that prices can differ dramatically depending on your pet's age, breed, health, and more. We've compiled a list of 5 of the most affordable pet health insurance plans to make picking the right policy a little easier.

#1. Figo

Figo is relatively new to the game but is taking the pet insurance market by storm. Unlike many other major pet insurance providers, Figo offers a modern, online approach to pet insurance. Through Figo's state-of-the-art Pet Cloud app, you can file insurance claims, stay updated on your pet's vaccination schedule, and much more.

This online support may well appeal to the younger generation and has proven popular, with Figo winning several awards since commencing business. Figo's plans are highly affordable, too, with plans costing as little as $1.50 a day on average.

Deductibles change depending on your dog's age and health but reset annually rather than per condition. Figo's most popular plan comes with a maximum annual benefit of $10,000.

The average cost of insurance for cats and dogs through Figo is between $20 and $30 per month. Figo is one of the only companies that charges less for dog insurance than cat insurance.

#2. Healthy Paws

Healthy Paws is an insurance company built around helping pet parents afford the best "pawssible" veterinary care for their fur-babies. One of the best features of Healthy Paws? Its plans have no annual or yearly maximum payout.

Healthy Paws are winning plenty of plaudits, with U.S. News & World Report ranking them as the top pet insurance provider of 2021. Because of its competitive reimbursement rates and deductibles, you'd think that Healthy Paws' plans would be expensive — but guess again. Healthy Paws plans cost an average of $39 per month for dogs and $12 per month for cats.

Healthy Paws also offers high reimbursement percentages, covering 70%, 80%, or 90% of veterinary fees. Its deductibles are also competitively priced, ranging from $100 to $500.

#3. Embrace

Glowing reviews, low rates, and policy transparency are just a few of the reasons Embrace ranks as one of the most affordable pet health insurance providers. Embrace appears to care about not only its furry clientele, but also pet parents by attempting to make pet care as affordable as possible.

Embrace offers up to 90% reimbursement on claims and coverage for curable pre-existing conditions if your pet is symptom-free for 12 months. Your deductible also goes down by $50 for every year without a claim on your policy. Embrace also covers the cost of vet examinations.

Embrace has a one-time enrollment fee of $25 and a monthly processing fee of $1. On average, Embrace's plans cost between $20 and $30 per month for dogs and $15 to $20 per month for cats.

#4. Pets Best

Founded over 15 years ago, Pets Best has become one of the best pet insurers around. The company was started by Jack Stephens, who founded North America's first-ever pet insurance provider in 1981.

One of the best features of Pets Best is its customization options to help reduce monthly premiums. Pets Best offers deductibles ranging from $50 to $1,000 and annual policy limits ranging from $2,500 to unlimited. Its reimbursement percentages range from 70% to 90%.

Pets Best offers accident-only or accident and illness plans. You can also add a wellness add-on to cover everything from microchipping to spay/neuter

The average cost of accident and illness pet insurance through Pets Best is between $35 and $58 per month for dogs and $22 and $46 per month for cats. The accident-only plan is much cheaper and costs around $6 to $10 per month.

#5. PetPlan

Started by a perplexed pet parent who once received a vet bill for $5,000, PetPlan focuses on keeping your pet's vet bills as low as they can go.

As with the most affordable pet insurers, PetPlan offers reimbursement rates of 70%, 80%, or 90%. Deductibles range from $250 to $1,000, which is standard among reasonably priced pet insurers.

One of the best features of PetPlan is its full coverage for dental and hereditary conditions. You also won't have to pay any sign-up fees or add-ons for full transparency. PetPlan is also widely available across the U.S. and Canada, making it easier to claim. The average cost of PetPlan is around $35 per month for dogs and $25 per month for cats.
