Being the fourth largest city in the great state of Illinois, there is no shortage of things to do and see in Joliet. Even though the city is located only forty miles southwest of Chicago, Joliet residents have little desire to head to the capital of the midwest. Because of the large stretches of flat land and open spaces, many Joliet residents have canine family members.

However, do not think that the city is just a haven for pups! Many Illinois residents flock to the city to indulge in a little bit of gambling at Hollywood Casino and Harrah's Joliet. Not a gambler? Don't fret -- you can always spend time at one of Joliet's two race tracks! Not only can you spend the day tail-gating with your friends and eating delicious food, but you can also reserve a racing experience when you want to get behind the wheel.

If you just want to spend some time in nature with your pup away from all humans and noise, Joliet has just the right places for you to go to. The city is full of parks, both large and small, where you can spend a peaceful afternoon or serene day at. Although not all the parks are dog parks, they do allow dogs on leashes -- perfect for taking long strolls or exercising with your buddy!

Located in the neighborhood of Preston Heights is one of the oldest natural preserves in the region: the Forest Preserve District of Will County. This large spread of lush green grass does not have a dog park, but it has the next best thing -- a trail! You can choose to walk through the forest preserve, or head to The Wauponsee Glacial Trail. This trail is one of 1,600 former rail corridors converted into walking trails across the country. It is not an off-leash trail, so you will have to take a leash and your own doggie poop bags. Just make sure you wear your walking shoes if you want to get a workout!

Located on the easternmost side of Joliet is the scenic neighborhood of Forest Park. Forest Park is home to the Old Plank Road Trail, another Rails-to-Trails project that welcomes both human and canine explorers. This trail in particular is a beautiful place to walk or run with your pup. You can walk as much as you want on the trail, or even wander into the beautiful forests that surround the trail. However, it does require pups to be leashed at all times. You'll also need to bring your own water and waste bags.

One of the best places to take your pup in Joliet is the neighborhood of Birds. Not only does this neighborhood have the cutest name and the most beautiful scenery, but it is also home to another furrific rail-trail that's perfect for walkies. The entire Illinois and Michigan Canal Trail stretches for just under 80 miles and offers a variety of terrains for your pooch to sniff along the way. The trail, which has a trailhead in Joliet, is frequented by families with children, elderly people, runners and plenty of dog lovers. Just make sure you keep your most loyal companion on a leash, and don't forget to bring some extra water for both of you!

If you and your dog need a relaxing day at the park or just want to stretch your legs and run, we have just the place for you! Head to the west part of Joliet to Frontage Rd, where you will find Hammel Woods River Access and Dog Park. The dog park is off-leash so your pup can run with abandon and make some new friends. However, what makes this park special is the river access. A river runs through the park, and is surrounded by lush green grass and forestry. People from the surrounding areas flock to Hammel Woods River Access and Dog Park on the weekends to have picnics, hike and rest.

Although there are many beautiful places located in Joliet, it's good to get out of your own town and head somewhere new. Luckily, you do not have to go that far, because Tratiana Dog Farms Park on Farrell Road is less than ten minutes away. This giant dog park has everything you could possibly ever want, including plenty of space for dogs to run and play without the constraints of leashes. You will also find plenty of families playing with their children at this park. Also, on special days, local vendors set up stalls for park goers to purchase things for themselves and their pups!
