The Louisville metropolitan area has 122 city parks, many of which welcome leashed dogs on their trails and paths. Louisville is also home to the largest municipal urban forest in the country, the Jefferson Memorial Forest. With more than 35 miles of trails winding through beautiful woodland scenery, this area is perfect for a daytime hike, or hike, with your best four-legged friend.

For a more relaxed setting where your whole family can spend a day out in the sun, visit the Waterfront Park. This Park covers 85 acres and was completed in three phases, with open spaces for events, smaller spaces for picnics and parties, and walkways connecting them all together. Take your pup along the river or after wearing your pup down, sit back together with a good book.

The Louisville Dog Run Association operates dog parks in the city, overseeing eight official off-leash runs. The Sawyer Dog Park is located within the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park and has six acres where your dog can run freely with friends. Though there is an annual membership fee for access to the park, the money goes back towards the dog parks, ensuring that you and your pup always have a well-maintained place to visit.

Check out the doggy hotspots in Highlands! The Morton Avenue Dog Park is the perfect place to take your pooch for an off-leash run. It is fully fenced in, and there is a playground close by if you and your canine compadre are accompanied by little ones. After you've tired out your pup at the park, head over to Dirty Tease, a T-shirt shop that welcomes four-legged guests. Choose from one of their pre-made, dog-themed shirt designs, or have them make a custom shirt for you to broadcast your love for your hound to the world. As long as your pup is well-behaved and on a leash, they'll be happy to have you look around the store.

If you're in Brownsboro Zorn, you're near some pretty excellent territory for doggy-themed fun! The Louisville Champions Park is a great big patch of green near the river's edge. Inside this giant park is an excellent dog run, aptly named “Champions Dog Run”. There are over three and a half acres of space for your pooch to run free here. If you've got a small pupper, no worries! Champions Dog Run has separate areas for big, small, and all dogs. Don't worry about water, because this park has its own! You do however need a Louisville Dog Run Association Dog Park Permit to enter, so be sure to grab one before you go.

The river runs right through the city center in Louisville, which makes for great riverside dog walking! The Louisville Waterfront Park has many different trails that you can venture on with your pup. The paths have lots of shade for your strolling comfort! Down the river a bit is the Louisville Riverwalk, a trail developed by Rails to Trails. This organization converts old abandoned railway corridors into ter-ruff-ic walking trails! Each rail to trail area has easy-to-access parking and an info map online so you can plan your doggy date ahead of time.

South of the city lies Parkwood, a more rural area home to Iroquois Park! If you're looking for green grass, beautiful scenery, and lots of trees, this place is for you. The pathways through the park are paved for easy travel. As you walk the grounds, you may even hear or see performances happening at the amphitheatre from afar, although no dogs are permitted inside. That being said, it does add some fun to a regular walk with your best buddy if some kickin’ music is playing.
