Chaparral

Chaparral

Chaparral  is one of the finest neighborhoods in northern Scottsdale. This neighborhood has consistently been voted number one in liveability by dogs of all breeds (no Russian Wolfhounds appear on this voter roll). Various stores and activities for both human and their canine companions can be found here. Polls show, though, that voters were heavily persuaded by the fact that Chaparral Dog Park can be found at 5401 N. Hayden Road. This dog park has two separate fenced areas for Democrat and Republican dogs--oops--two separate areas for shy and more aggressive dogs.  A third area is used when the other two are receiving much-needed maintenance. Grass, benches, and water fountains engineered for dogs make this a winning place for every pup of any political persuasion.

North Scottsdale

North Scottsdale

Horizon Dog Park is a North Scottsdale’s favorite destination.  This gem of a  dog park is located at 15444 N. 100th Street. Smaller than the other city’s dog parks, it occupies ⅔ acres. Dogs here have a fenced area of grass and dirt to run leash-free.  A special dust control sprinkler helps flying dust, and keep all dogs reasonably clean. Benches and a shaded picnic table provide a respite from a spirited play or for a pet-friendly picnic. Unfortunately, the Park is located near a drainage ditch and may flood after a heavy rainstorm.  Still, this little oasis is a prime destination for the many, many dogs living in North Scottsdale.

South Scottsdale

South Scottsdale

South Scottsdale is another one of those dog-loving Scottsdale neighborhoods. This bustling area boasts established modest homes (by Scottsdale standards) and new constructions. South Scottsdale is home to Scottsdale’s third public dog park, Vista del Camino.  This dog park is the smallest of the three public dog parks, only ½ acre, yet it does give the opportunity for a bit of off-leash exercise and nose-to-nose socialization.  The surrounding park area gives more opportunity for exercise on-leash.  There are trails, a lake, and even some disc golf.  Ramadas provide shade, and there are even a few big trees that do, too.  Fields of green grass smell good to the nose, and feel so good under the paws. The standard of living for all fortunate creatures living here is oh so fine.

Downtown

Downtown

Downtown Scottsdale is part of that neighborhood that has earned the nickname, “Beverly Hills of the Desert”.  This neighborhood is, to be frank, home to some of Scottsdale’s wealthiest humans (and their dogs).  Dogs living here frequently are adored and pampered. The houses are big, and every kind of shopping or service needed or wanted can be had.  Scottsdale Quarter, located 15279 N. Scottsdale Road, is a pet-friendly shopping mall that serves all these needs and wants. This open-air center welcomes dogs as long as they are on-leash.  Some individual retailers in the quarter may exclude them, so it is wise to check in advance if you want to go to a specific store.  Like the neighborhood itself, there is plenty of sights, sounds, and smells at the quarter to satisfy the senses of a dog, and tempt the wallet of a human.

Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt

Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt

The Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt cuts through the heart of Scottsdale.  This eleven-mile trail that runs north to south serves the mostly residential communities along its borders. Dogs can enjoy a stroll along the trail, which can be accessed at several thoroughfares. One end point of the trail is located at Arizona Canal Path at N. Pima Road.  Leashes are required for dogs to share this oasis of green grass and trees, and humans must be diligent in cleaning up after their friend. This trail has bypasses under major roads, and it connects golf courses and parks along its route.  Parking is provided at Eldorado and Chaparral Parks.
