Humboldt State
The Humboldt State neighborhood hosts the city's university and a large residential area. Although pretty crowded, the neighborhood still has a large park known as Redwood Park. The area is popular among residents, thanks to its scenic redwood trees, huge open area, and forested trails. The nature paths are dog-friendly to leashed pups, and offer plenty of places to run around, exercise, and socialize with other pups. There are benches and trash bins, but humans must bring water and clean-up bags. Stewart Park is a smaller and more urban park in the neighborhood, with a well-groomed grassy area, paved paths, and children's playground. Dogs are welcome in the park while on a leash, with access to water fountains, clean-up stations, and benches.36

Samoa
Samoa sits right on the shore on the west side of Arcata, with gorgeous views of the blue ocean and sandy beach. Along the shoreline is the Lanphere Dunes Unit, a mixture of wetlands, dunes, and wooded areas. Although single access is denied, guided tours are available along the nature trails throughout the park, and tours allow leashed dogs to accompany their humans. There are no amenities, and owners will have to bring clean-up bags. The Manila Community Park is a more open park that sits along the shore of the Arcata Ba. This park allows dogs on a leash to play in the large open areas of the park, or take a dive into the bay along the access points. There are benches and trash bins at this park.24

Alliance
The Alliance neighborhood is in the northern part of the city, and consists of woods and residential homes. A dog-friendly park here is the Shay Park, a wooded area with the Giant Jolly Creek running through it. The park allows leashed dogs, with dirt trails meandering throughout the park. Owners will have to bring clean-up bags and water. Another park is the Larson Park, which offers the opposite of Shay Park. With large grassy fields, the park is completely open, and allows a lot more leg room for Fido to run around and play. Dogs must remain on a leash inside the park, with access to water fountains and benches.12

Indianola
Indianola provides that wooded getaway a lot of the residents of Arcata are looking for. A favorite destination in the neighborhood is the Jacoby Creek Forest, a 400-acre reserve with thick coastal redwoods and 8 miles of dirt trails winding among the trees. Dogs are welcome at the reserve but must remain on a leash. There is a small parking fee, so come prepared. Though there are trash bins in the parking area, humans must bring water and clean-up bags for this adventure. The Freshwater Farms Reserve is a nature preserve that protects the land around the Freshwater Creek, with a .8-miles walking trail and scenes of the natural wildlife and vegetation. Dogs are welcome while on a leash at the park, and owners must bring water and clean-up bags.
