Riverfront Park lies along the banks of the Connecticut River, northeast of Middle Haddam. There are stroller-friendly hiking trails throughout where your leashed pup is always welcome. You and Fifi can walk down to the water’s edge and throw in a line to catch some trout or just to relax. There are picnic pavilions with tables, so be sure to pack a lunch with plenty of water. Restrooms are provided on site, but be sure to bring clean up mitts to keep the park pristine. Enjoy entertainment and concerts along the riverfront all summer long. All are free and pup-friendly.

The Salmon River State Forest is where you will find outdoor adventure in East Haddam. This town, east of Middle Haddam, has over 1300 acres of forested beauty. Your fur-ever friend will delight in hiking its many trails, including the Salmon River Trail’s 6.7-mile journey. There is also a portion of the Airline State Park’s rail trail running through with similar hiking opportunities. There are trails for mountain biking, fields dedicated to various sports and a handicap-accessible dock for fly fishing. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch, water bottles, and your extended leash for a day full of pawtastic memories.

Lake Pocotopaug
Lake Pocotopaug is a village in the town of East Hampton, northwest of Middle Haddam. Covering a whopping 512 acres, this is Connecticut’s largest inland body of water. Sears Park sits along this lake and is the perfect place to take your pup. There are beach areas, separate swimming areas where you both can cool off, and lots of boating opportunities. Hike the many dedicated trials throughout and Fido can stretch his legs on a longer leash in the open spaces. Be sure to bring a picnic lunch, lots of water and clean up bags to keep this park pristine.

The Westchester neighborhood in the town of Colchester is located southeast of Middle Haddam, and is where you will find Babcock Pond Wildlife Management Area. Hiking is at its best here where you and your pup can enjoy miles of stroller and handicapped-accessible trails. It is also a fantastic birdwatching location so bring binoculars! Wintertime is dedicated to cross-country skiing on these groomed trails. When your tummy starts growling, head to Harry’s Place where you and Fido can dine on burgers, fries, and ice cream at their outdoor picnic tables. Or try dog-friendly Tim’s Bistro where pups are always welcome.

East Hampton Town Center
The East Hampton Town Center is located just south of the historic district of Middle Haddam in the nearby town of East Hampton. Here, you and your pup will find real adventure at the Hurd State Park. Welcoming to pups on leash, this area is frequented by mountain bikers and hikers to enjoy outdoor fun. Explore their foot trails and check out their campsites dedicated exclusively to those paddling down the Connecticut River. Take advantage of the picnic shelters with tables to enjoy a meal with your pawtastic friend. Pit toilets are onsite, but be sure to bring water and binoculars, as this is an active birdwatching location.
