This family-friendly city is conveniently near Jefferson Way about 15 minutes from Palmyra. The Pickard Recreation Area offers a 770-acre plot of land that invites on-leash dogs to enjoy their many amenities like picnic tables, horseshoe courts, basketball court, campgrounds, pond, woodlands and hiking trails. The McVay Trail is part of the 1,600 rail-trail conservancy project that repurposes old, unused railroads into walking trails, making it an excellent spot to walk your fur baby! If you need lodging accommodations that cater to dogs, the Quality Inn and Airbnb have you covered.

A short 18-mile drive north of Palmyra, Adelphi is very conveniently situated along Highway 65, Highway 163, and Highway 5! Rover’s Ranch is a local dog boarding company that has a large fenced-in dog park complete with swimming pools, shade trees and training classes! Yellow Banks Park is scenically nooked along the Des Moines River encourages dog owners to bring their leashed pups to enjoy the sounds and sights of the running water. They only ask you please keep an eye on and clean up after your canine companions. Local Airbnb rentals have several dog friendly lodging options in the area for those of you visiting the area.

Altoona is located just 25 minutes north of Palmyra and is easily accessible from Interstate 80 and Highway 65. The Gay Lea Wilson 4-Mile Creek Greenway Trail is part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy project. Lace up your best walking shoes, pack some water, slap a leash on Fido, and hit the trail! You’ll want to pack a camera, too, since there are some breathtaking views along the way. The local Bass Pro Shop also loves pooches. They allow well-mannered, on-leash dogs to accompany owners while they shop and browse around their massive store.

Very conveniently located at the junction where Interstate 80, Interstate 35, and Interstate 235 meet, Norwoodville is only a short 24-minute drive from Palmyra. Fido is sure to love hanging his head out the window on the drive. Reno Memorial Dog Park is an 8.5 acre fenced off-leash area that includes a separate area for small dogs, trees, and a shaded shelter! You can also access the Gay Lea Wilson Greenway Trail from here. If you’re feeling adventurous, pack plenty of water and see if you can tackle the whole thing! Your darling dog is sure to thank you.

Des Moines is a local mecca for shopping, dining and entertainment and is one of the larger cities in the state that is just 18 miles from Palmyra! Riverwalk Dog Park overlooks the Des Moines River and offers 8.5 acres of off-leash, fenced-in fun and has a separate area for small dogs under 20 lbs. as well as a shade shelter. Mercy Park, JoAnna Cheatom Park, Good Park, and Drake Park are a few of the local areas that welcome on-leash dogs to enjoy provided walking paths and open spaces.
