Within West Barnstable, there are expansive areas along the shore to explore with your dog. Here you can access the Great Marshes, part of the 3,800 acre Sandy Neck Salt marsh and barrier beach system. The Great Marshes themselves are 113 acres of sprawling salt marsh views, ponds, and shady woodlands. To explore these areas, you and your pup can take a hike along the 1.5 miles of trails throughout. There’s even a coastal overlook, where you can enjoy sweeping views of Barnstable Harbor and the Sandy Neck Barrier Beach. Dogs are welcome to join the fun, as long as they stay leashed and leave only paw prints!

Sandwich City Center

The bordering town to the west of West Barnstable is Sandwich. In the Sandwich City Center, you can find some great things to do with your pupper. If you and your dog are itching to get into the great outdoors, head over to the Shawme-Crowell State Forest. This State Forest is known as the stepping stone to Cape Cod hosts campgrounds, and peaceful trails through the woods. The campsites are heavily wooded for privacy, and have modern restrooms available. When you need a treat on a hot day, head over to Ice Cream Sandwich in the same neighborhood. Here you can enjoy some delicious homemade ice cream with your canine companion at one of the eight dog friendly outdoor tables.

Hyannis Port

In the nearby town of neighborhood of Hyannis Port in Barnstable, you can find some more great places to check out with your pup! The Kalmus Beach is just a 20 minute drive away from West Barnstable, and welcomes dogs during the off season, between September 15th and May 15th. During that time, your pup can run and play in along the shore glorious off-leash freedom! This beach is famous for its windsurfing, so you and your pup can relax and watch in the sand. If your craving some seafood after all that time on the beach, head over to Bluewater Grille located in the same neighborhood. Here you can dig into some lobster rolls next to your best pal at the outdoor seating.

West Yarmouth

West Yarmouth is a scenic neighborhood in Yarmouth along the Atlantic ocean that wraps around Lewis Bay. This neighborhood is just 20 minutes away from West Barnstable, and has shown it’s love to the neighborhood dogs by creating the Yarmouth Dog Park! This dog park is located on Buck Island Road in the west end of Yarmouth. Here your dog can have a safe place to run and play off-leash and enjoy some pawsitive socialization! The park has several fenced off areas for all kinds of kinds, including the large, the small, and the temperamental dogs. The surface of the dog park is dirt and pebbles. There are waste bags and drinking water available, so all you need to bring is your playful pupper!

South Dennis

In the South Dennis neighborhood of Dennis in Cape Cod, you can find the Fresh Pond Dog Park, only a 25 minute drive away from West Barnstable. The drive is worth it though! This dog park has two large fenced in areas, one for large breeds and one for the little guys. The sand and soft grassy footing in this park is pleasant on the paws! Your dog can run around off-leash, and then cool down by taking a splash in the pond or taking a seat in the shade. The park also features a half mile lakeside walking trail. Fido needs to stay leashed when he’s not in the fenced in areas. You’ll need to bring waste bags.
