Best Dog Friendly Neighborhoods in Glen Cove
Glen Cove City Center
Glen Cove City Center
Glen Cove clearly loves dogs, because they’ve created their own dog park! The Glen Cove Dog Park can be found within Dennis Brian Murray Park, in the City Center of Glen Cove. This pretty park is located on a wooded hillside overlooking the downtown area. Here you can find a large fenced off area where your dog can run and play off-leash in a safe environment. There are also benches, and drinking water available. Dogs are welcome to explore the surrounding park as well, but need to stay leashed when they are not in the fenced off area. After working up an appetite from all that play time, head over to Cedar Creek, located just across Pratt Street from the Dennis Brian Murray Park. This refined American bar and grill has three outdoor dog friendly tables.
Old Tappan Road
Old Tappan Road
If you and your dog are in the Old Tappan Road neighborhood, you’re in for a treat! It’s here that you can find the Welwyn Preserve. This 204 acre nature preserve is located on a former estate, and features a Holocaust Museum inside a 1913 mansion. You can also explore the wild and untamed nature along the many trails throughout the park, including one that leads down to the beach. There are several abandoned buildings and a greenhouse along the trails that have been overtaken by nature and graffiti, and are fascinating to look at. Dogs are welcome to join their humans on the trails, as long as they stay leashed and leave only paw prints!
The Landing
The Landing
The Landing neighborhood of Glen Cove is the place to go to get close to the water and the Long Island Sound. A furtastic place to walk your dog in this neighborhood is at the Mercadante Beach. This beach is open to Glen Cove residents only, but is a great place to get to know the neighborhood dogs and humans. The park features some picnic tables to kick back and enjoy the views and sunshine. At the tip of Glen Cove Creek, which splits off from the Long Island Sound, you can find Pratt Park. This park has shade trees, views of the creek and a paved walking path. Dogs are welcome here too! Don’t forget the waste bags and dog treats.
Sands Point
Sands Point
Just across the Hempstead Bay is the small town of Sands Point. This town is proud home to the Sands Point Preserve, and is just a 20 minute drive from Glen Cove. Here you and your dog can walk along the trails and up the cliffs, with beautiful views of the Long Island Sound and the Sands Point Castle. Within the park there are gardens, forests, mansions and shorelines. There is a small entrance fee, and leashed dogs are allowed to explore with their two-legged friends throughout the whole park, except for the beach. There are even waste bags available along the trails. When it’s time for a treat, head over to Nikkei of Peru. Here you can enjoy Japanese or Peruvian cuisine at one of the dog friendly outdoor tables.
Mill Neck
Mill Neck
Just east of Glen Cove, in the nearby town of Mill Neck, you can find the Shu Swamp Nature Preserve. “Shu” is an old dutch word that means cascading waters, and the nature preserve is rightfully named! This magical place is just a 10 minute drive from Glen Cove, and features brooks and ponds, surrounded by a large variety of trees, flowers and ferns. The preserve has boardwalks over the wetlands, forest paths, footbridges and observation decks. On the southwest end of the Preserve, sits the John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden. This garden will transport you to ancient Japan, with the traditional tea houses, gardens and koi ponds. Well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout these areas, as long as they stay leashed and are picked up after.
