Auburndale is one of the villages that makes up the greater city of Newton in Massachusetts. Despite being quite small, there’s a lot of local pride for “The Dale”, as it’s known to longtime residents. There is one animal hospital within the village itself, and half a dozen more close by in the greater city of Newton. Dog lovers can rest easy knowing that care for their pets is never far away.

When exploring Auburndale, start with the Auburndale stretch of Commonwealth Ave Newton Inner Lane, which lasts about 3 miles of the out-and-back trail’s 10.5 mile length. It’s a great way to see the area with your dog! If you’re looking for something shorter, you and Fido can tackle the Upper Charles River Reservation Trail. This hike runs close to the water for great views, and is recommended for all activity levels. Your dog should be on leash for both trails!

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, take your dog to cool down with you at Wally’s Wicked Good Ice Cream! This ice cream parlor has dog-friendly tables outdoors where you can rest and recover, and sample a wide variety of homemade ice cream treats. Auburndale is a lively community to explore with your dog!

Auburndale North is home to two great parks to walk your dog. The first is Auburndale Park. This space has it all: playground equipment, open fields, benches, and picnic areas. Your leashed dog will love exploring, and social dogs will love how many people flock to the park. If you’re looking for other on leash fun, head to the Norumbega Park. This former amusement park is now a regular community park with access to the Charles River! Dogs can splash in the water, and it’s pupular enough that you’ll probably see another furry friend! Bring your own water bowl to fill up at either park.

The Angleside neighborhood of the town of Waltham is only six minutes from Auburndale, making it closer than some neighborhoods in Auburndale’s own town of Newton! Fox Park in Angleside is a beautiful, quiet park along the Charles River. It hosts an easy, one mile loop trail that offers great views of the water. Your dog has to stay on leash in the park, but the views and typical solitude make up for it! This is the perfect place to exercise shy dogs, or to get away from the city for a while and step into a park that, despite the area’s population density, feels like you’re out in the woods.

This park is mostly green space, equipped with trails for walking and biking. You can hit the trails with your leashed dog, or press on to the dog park portion. This is a pawsome dog park, but be aware that it’s not fully fenced. Dogs who are iffy on their voice commands might not be ready for this park yet. Otherwise, the park is usually busy and full of furry friends for social play!

Farlow Park in Newton Corner is just eight minutes from Auburndale. It’s also a must-see if you’re in the area. The park is historic, with large, old trees that offer an amazing glimpse into what the area looked like before it was fully settled. There is also playground equipment and, most exciting to dogs, walking pathways! You can do a loop for a brisk, high intensity walk, or amble among less direct paths beneath the trees. Bring your own water bottle and bowl if you want to fully explore the park, as fountains are few in this old park location.
