Dog Areas in Fairhaven

1 Park

Separated from Downtown Eureka by Humboldt Bay, the sunny town of Fairhaven, CA is peaceful as it is scenic. In times past, Fairhaven made waves as the home of a historic shipyard. From the late 1800s, Danish expat Hans Bendixsen built over 115 schooners and tall ships in a yard outside of town. One of these, the C.A. Thayer, is preserved by the San Francisco Maritime Museum.

Though the shipyard is long gone, Fairhaven remains a pretty sea-ductive spot -- close to some bucolic beaches, bordered by Samoa to the north, and surrounded by water on all other sides. It’s easy to see why the town’s 200 or so residents are happy to drop anchor here! There’s no vet in Fairhaven, but you’ll find a choice of clinics to take care of your buddy across the water in Eureka.

There’s no designated dog park in Fairhaven, but don’t let that take the wind out of your sails! Wagging tails are welcome on many of the beaches in the area, and Humboldt County’s famous Redwood Coast boasts some fantastically fur-friendly hiking trails. And if your four-legged friend needs a fenced area to run free in, you’ll find plenty of pawesome parks just across the pond!

If your pooch loves swimming as part of their off-leash adventures, the Samoa Dunes Recreation Area is a real mutts-visit! This gorgeous 300-acre beach park allows furry friends to roam off-leash, as long as they’re under voice control. Your pup is sure to have a whale of a time splashing about in the shallow water, or just chasing a ball on the sand, and owners will certainly appreciate the spectacular views of the Pacific. Bring your own bags and water, and be careful -- you’ll see signs everywhere warning of ticks, so insect repellent is a must!

Some pups and owners feel a little more secure playing in a fenced-in area. If this is the case for you and your furry friend, you’d need to be barking mad not to bring them to the Eureka Dog Park in Myrtletown! There’s plenty of space here for your pooch to run around and tire themselves out in. The park also has a separate area for small dogs, so your pup can play and socialize be they big or little. Bags, water, and some toys are provided, so all you need to do is BYOB (Bring Your Own Beast)!

While you’re in redwood country, it’d be a huge faux paw not to go marvel at some of the oldest and most majestic trees in the whole world! Head up to the Headwater Forest Reserve and you and your pooch can do just that -- and get in some off-leash hiking at the same time. Free-roaming fur balls are allowed on the first three miles of trails in the park, so your pooch can sniff and explore while you take in the wooded wonderland around you. There are also some rumors that Bigfoot has been spotted in the area, but don’t worry -- by all accounts, he seems like the shy, retiring type.
