Located about an hour south of Lynchburg, Nathalie is a quaint town surrounded by fields and meadows. Pups and their parents can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities while admiring scenic views of vegetation and clear blue skies. The town is pooch-friendly, but its size doesn't allow for its own veterinarian. When your pup needs help, you can travel to the neighboring cities of Halifax or South Boston for veterinary care.

On a warm summer morning, take Fido for a stroll along the Clarkton Bridge that connects the counties of Charlotte and Halifax. The restored wooden bridge spans 53 feet over a riverbed, offering amazing views of the surrounding countryside. Your pup will enjoy walking along the bridge, and then climbing down the banks and splashing in the water.

When you need a beautiful, yet casual venue for a party or wedding, Bright Meadows Farm should be first on your list. Well behaved pups are always welcome as long as you clean up!

Whether you are looking for a small town to raise your pooch and family or passing through the area, Nathalie is a great destination for some peace and quiet.

One of the most “pup”ular destinations in the area is the Staunton River Battlefield Rail Trail about 18 miles east of Nathalie. This is a fun path that used to be part of the railroad corridor connecting several local towns. You can walk along the railroad or take your pup into the park that features interesting history from the Civil War. You can even walk over a refurbished train trestle and admire the views of wildlife and plants. There are restroom facilities at the visitor’s center, and you can refill your water bottles while Fido sniffs and rolls in the grassy field. If you are looking for a place for a great meal, stop by Darby’s Tavern at the Berry Hill Resort. You can enjoy authentic Southern cuisine while relaxing at the outdoor tables with your pooch.

If you travel about 30 miles southwest of Nathalie to the town of Sutherlin, the Richmond and Danville Rail Trail is a great place to hike with your pooch. The pathway is a former railroad line that was used during the Civil War. You can walk along the path and enjoy the farmland and wooded areas and the trail is pretty flat making it perfect for bikes or a stroller. Fido will have a great time jumping around in the wetland and getting his feet wet and you can lay a blanket on the open field when you need a rest and a snack. You can access the parking off State Road 1016 and be sure to dispose of doggie waste bags in the trash cans near the parking lot.
