New River

Visit Barbara’s Pet Park and experience New River’s only dog park. This pawsome spot offers space for pups to run off leash. Arizona weather is often heat, but the park helps pup beat the heat with shade structures and water fountains. There are even benches for owners to relax on while the dogs romp about. A membership is required for entry to this puptastic area. Need more outdoor adventure? Pack up your pup and head over to Lake Pleasant. Although dogs must be leashed while visiting, Lake Pleasant Regional Park offers trails ranging from a half to two miles that pups are sure to enjoy. Be sure to bring enough water to keep cool and hydrated. Lake Pleasant is also a pup-ular fishing spot. Whether you try casting a line from the shore or on a boat,  your fur baby will happily cheer you on.

New River Rd/ Shangri La Ln

The New River Road and Shangri La Lane area is home to the Daisy Mountain Trail. Although the trail is steep, the view from the top makes the climb worth it. This loop trail gains 1250 feet in elevation and clocks in at 6.8 miles, so make sure your pooch is ready for some serious exercise. Water is not available at the trailhead, so you’ll need to bring enough H2O to keep you and your pup well hydrated. If your pup isn’t in the mood for a hardcore hike, the first 1.3 miles is flat and often frequented by those seeking less of a climb.

N 12th St/ N New River Rd

Cave Creek Regional Park is only 15 miles southeast of New River in the rural town of Cave Creek. The park covers a staggering 2,922 acres of the Upper Sonoran Desert and has some pawsome hiking trails. Leashed pups are always welcome, so go ahead and bring your favorite four legged hiking buddy. Trails range from .2 miles all the way up to 5.8 miles and are multi-use, so you may encounter a mountain biker or horseback rider. The trails provide fetching views of the stunning desert landscape.  Be sure to bring enough water for your pooch and make sure she doesn’t overheat in the Arizona sun.

23rd Ave/ Dynamite Blvd

If your furry friend is itching for an outdoor adventure, grab some water and snacks and head over to Sonoran Phoenix Preserve. This natural space is located in Phoenix and is only 15 miles south of New River.  Trails range from just under a half a mile all the way up to 5.6 miles. Be sure to choose one that fits your dog’s abilities and stamina. Keep your leashed pup on the trail since you’ll be traveling through cactus country. A hurt paw is sure to dampen his spirits. You’ll also need to bring plenty of water since there is no H2O available at the trailhead.

35th Ave/ Happy Valley Blvd

The Deem Hills Recreation Area is 20 miles south of New River in Phoenix and is well worth the trip. Your pooch won’t want to miss a walk through this magnificent desert landscape. Keep your eyes open for snakes, lizards, birds and, of course, cactus. There are trails for all levels, but the Circumference Trail is a pupperific option if you’ve got a furry friend with a lot of energy. This trail runs 5.7 miles and circles the entire recreation area. Be sure to bring enough water to keep you and your furry friend hydrated. No doubt your pup will be ready to nap in the car on the way home.
