In 1803, the town of Rockville was named after Rock Creek, which runs through the entire town. In fact, the best place to go hiking with your dog is at the Rock Creek Park, which has seven trails of different skill levels from three to 18 miles long. Depending on the trail you take, there are several lakes, ponds, woods, hills, and rocky areas. Most trails are natural surface and secluded with great views of the lakes and creek as well as plenty of wildlife. With about 14,000 dogs living in Rockville, you will surely see one or two along the trails.

Great Falls Park has several trails ranging from easy to hard, but they all take you by scenic parts of the falls and historic ruins of Matildaville, named after Robert E. Lee’s wife. The River Trail is the hardest, but has the best views, with cliffs from 25-75 feet, and you will have to share the cliffs with vultures and herons. The views of the Potomac River from this trail are amazing, but it is dangerous without experience.

After hiking, you can get a room at one of the dog-friendly hotels in Rockville; such as the Sheraton on King Farm Boulevard, Best Western on West Montgomery Avenue, Quality Inn on Piccard Drive, Hilton on Rockville Pike, and Red Roof Plus on Shady Grove Road.
