In the heart of downtown are access points for three trails: the Summerset Trail, the Jerry Kelley Trail, and the McVay Trail. Fido can join you on any of these trails, but he needs to stay on a leash, one that’s no longer than 6 feet, at all times. Remember to bring your own waste disposal bags, as none are provided on the trails. Your dog will thank you!

If Fido doesn’t mind a going for a drive, and you don’t mind making the journey, make sure you travel to West Des Moines, which is a little over 30 minutes north of Sandyville. Downtown West Des Moines is home to Raccoon River Dog Park. This humongous dog park is nearly 12 acres, which gives your dog plenty of room to run around and get in his exercise. This dog park is sure to be filled with dogs, allowing your dog to make some pawesome new friends! This is an off-leash, fenced-in dog park. A permit is required to use the park.

About twenty minutes north of Sandyville is East Village, a neighborhood in Des Moines. East Village hosts a farmers’ market most Saturdays, and while farmers’ markets are fun on their own, it’s even more fun when you can bring your four-legged friend with you! You can support local farmers and let your dog have fun with all the sights and sounds. Once you’re done there, head over to Scenic Route Bakery for lunch. Fido can join you on the outdoor patio, but seating is limited, so you might want to give them a call first. A leash is required at both locations.

Around 30 miles north of Sandyville is Altoona, where you and your pup will find yet another exciting trail to explore. The Gay Lea Wilson Trail is just over 20 miles long, and it has an access point in Altoona. With plenty of trees lining the trail, the scenery is perfect, whether it’s all green in the summer, or the leaves are starting to turn in autumn. Locals say the trail provides a great leisurely walk, allowing you and your pooch to take things as slow as you’d like to.
