South Gate is the seventeenth largest city in Los Angeles County. From its beginning as part of the Lugo Land Grant back in 1810, South Gate has become a bustling city. There are four vets, including two animal hospitals, within the borders of South Gate, and more than a dozen more within a fifteen minute drive. Dogs and the people who love them can find many great attractions right in South Gate.

If you fancy a challenge, tackle the Rio Hondo Cycleway. The midpoint of this track runs through South Gate, but the entire thing stretches 17.6 miles. Choose what portion you want to tackle and walk as far as you need to to tire your pup out! If you want a gentler walk, try Circle Park in South Gate. This park features a large open field perfect for on-leash walks.

If you’re looking to spend the night in South Gate, head to American Best Value Inn - South Gate/Downey. This modest hotel chain allows one dog per room for a small pet fee. You can also book a night at Rodeway Inn in South Gate for another pet fee per dog.

South Gate is a great destination whether you’re having a getaway or a sit-and-staycation!

    #1 Hollydale

Hollydale in South Gate is home to an amazing off leash dog park, the Hollydale Dog Park located inside of the Hollydale Regional Park. Shy dogs who prefer on-leash exercise will love the larger regional park, but for everyone else, the off leash fun of Hollydale Dog Park can’t be beat! The area has everything that dogs need, from separate areas based on size to dog-friendly water fountains to keep them cool and hydrated. Humans love the shaded areas and benches! The best feature is how pupular this park is. Your dog will find woofderful friends, and the park’s long open hours (from dawn to dusk) means it works with every schedule.

    #5 North East Lynwood

Lynwood Park is a 2 minute drive from South Gate into the neighboring town of Lynwood. Located in the North East Lynwood neighborhood, this park serves as a gathering place for plenty of Lynwood residents. Your dog might not care much about the pool, but the sports fields are a fantastic place to explore when not in use! Even if there’s a game that day, the park has several paths to choose from. Walking a few loops of the park is enough to get in some exercise and enjoy the great day. Dogs should remain on leash inside Lynwood Park. You should also bring a bowl and baggies with you.
