West Athens, California is a census-designated place located near South Los Angeles. As the area is largely comprised of residential buildings, many consider it to be a true bedroom community for workers and students who commute to L.A. However, the town is home to Los Angeles Southwest Community College, so that also attracts plenty of locals to the area. The population of West Athens has been on the decline since the 2000 census.
If you’re looking to have some fun with Fido, you’ll need to look beyond West Athens. The area has no bark parks or dog-friendly restaurants, but with so many major cities nearby, including Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Inglewood, there are plenty of options just up the road. West Athens also doesn’t have a veterinarian clinic, but there is an office just outside of the area, so you won’t have to venture too far to get quality care for your furry friend.
Whether you’re looking for somewhere to walk your pooch or to let them enjoy some time off-leash, while West Athens might not have exactly what you’re looking for, there are plenty of places that do, and the best part is, all of them are just a bone’s throw away!
Just 8 miles east of West Athens, you and your pup will enjoy playing together at Hollydale Dog Park. This bark park lets your dog get some off-leash exercise while socializing with some new furry friends. When you get to the park, you’ll find there’s plenty of free parking available. Inside of the park, there’s agility equipment for your pup to play on; will your dog prefer the weaving poles or the tires to jump over? Water and waste bags are provided by the park, and the staff kindly requests that you clean up after your pooch. No one wants to step in any unexpected mess!
When traffic is bad, Culver City Dog Park is about 25 minutes from West Athens, which still isn’t too far! If you’re looking for a large dog park where your pooch can safely play with pups their own size, look no further. Culver City Dog Park does have both a small dog section and a large dog section, and each section is pretty spacious. Water and clean-up materials are usually available, but it never hurts to have some extra on hand. After a heavy rain, this park can get quite muddy, so make sure you have some towels on hand for easy clean-up.
If you’re looking for somewhere new to take Fido for a walk, why not head to Manhattan Beach’s El Porto neighborhood? You’ll find an access point to Hermosa Valley Greenbelt, a trail that’s three-and-a-half miles long. The trail is mostly comprised of dirt and cement paths, so it’s perfect for everyone; it’s even wheelchair accessible. Your canine companion can join you on the trail, but you’ll need to keep them on their leash for the duration of your walk. You’ll also need to remember to bring along waste bags for easy clean-up. Make sure to bring water and to wear comfortable shoes.
Less than 15 miles from West Athens, you and your dog can have a furrific time hanging out at Long Beach’s Uptown Dog Park. This bark park will make sure your day doesn’t go to the dogs. With two separate sections for dogs of different sizes, you can be confident your dog can safely make new friends. Uptown Dog Park does provide water for your best pal, and it also has waste stations; it’s your responsibility to clean up any mess your dog tries to leave behind. What are you waitingfur? We can practically hear Spot howling to go!
Los Angeles’s Playa Vista neighborhood is about 20 minutes away from West Athens, but it has yet another bark park for you and Fido to enjoy together. Oberrieder Dog Park has two separate sections, as most dog parks do. However, locals who attend the park don’t really seem to mind which side your dog uses, no matter what size they are. Use your best judgment, though; you know your dog best. The park provides water for Fido, and there’s shaded seating for dog moms and dads. Make sure you bring some poop scoops from home; none are provided for you.
