Located on Long Island Sound with three public beaches on the coast, Westport is a vibrant town with a community eager to make a difference by preserving traditions and conserving natural resources. Leisure activities and recreation areas are the local pride, in addition to the diverse shopping venues in the downtown area. Westport has a surprising number of pet care clinics considering its size. Four of them are located on the eastern bank of Saugatuck River, with two more on the opposite bank.

Westport is undeniably charming; its downtown region is set on the Saugatuck River. You'll find recreation activities to the south. Your pooch will be a welcome guest in Winslow Park, adjacent to Westport Playhouse and set right in the heart of the city. This is a huge park with lots of grass, trees, a fence and all the friendly pooches and dog owners in Westport. The special off-leash area where your mutt can run free is located in the northern part of the main park.

Westport is also home to something everyone loves: the beach! The coastal area of the town is a heaven made of sun, sand, water and lots of op-paw-tunities to splash. Combo Beach is the only dog-friendly beach in the area. Here, your mutt is welcome to swim, splash, and rescue a Frisbee from the water, all while off his leash. Make sure your pup is under your voice control because the area is not fenced.

Westport Inn may become a great solution for you if you decide to stay in the city for a while. They have different dog-friendly solutions and do not charge an additional fee for dogs under 25 lbs. that stay there.

The oldest neighborhood in the southeastern part of Westport has a well-developed transport system that makes it easily accessible for those who are looking for some peace and quiet in nature. This area doesn't have many tourist attractions -- just one coffee shop and a post office in the center of the neighborhood. However, Green Farms is home to a lovely green space: Machamux Park, located off Green Farms Road. This is a small lawn with a fence and picnic areas, making it the pawfect place for a quiet day out. You're free to let your pup run off-leash here, but you should keep him under your voice control.

The area has a few cultural, historical, and recreation areas, but if you want your pooch to have a blast, take him to Jennings Dog Beach located off Sandcastle Playground. A furrific time is guaranteed! This is the only off-leash beach in the area where pooches are welcome to dig and run, but aren't allowed into any buildings, pavilions or playgrounds. If this beach is a little too crowded for you, there's another option to the south. Penfield Beach is a great place for leashed pooches to spend a day of fun in the sun and surf with their masters!

    #5 Lake Mohegan Recreation Area

    0

Lake Mohegan is a 15-minute drive from the city of Westport, but this huge recreation area is worth visiting with your pooch! Lake Mohegan and its surrounding green space encompasses more than 1,700 acres, which include miles of walking trails and areas where you can let your pooch off-leash! The trails surround the water and creek, making the walking experience pleasant and fun for both owners and pooches. You will find trash cans and scoopers, but no water fountains in the area, so it would be smart to take some with you. However, some pooches love drinking water straight from the creek!
