There's a reason why such a large number of retirees flock to Florida the first chance they get. The sun is always shining, the beaches are beautiful with crystal clear water, and there is an abundance of activities. If you live in Highland City, you are incredibly lucky because you are nearly equidistant from two large Floridian muttropolises: Tampa and Orlando.

In closer proximity to Highland City, you will find an abundance of small lakes, ponds, rivers, and parks. Each park has beautiful scenery with plenty to see and do for you and your pooch. Just make sure you take a camera with you to take some beautiful photos!

You can also head to Tampa or Orlando for delicious dog-friendly food and shopping. You and Fido will be pawsitively spoiled for choice for things to do in either city. Tampa is just a 45-minute drive away, while Orlando is a little further afield at a little over an hour, depending on traffic.

In addition to being close to theme parks, restaurants, forest preserves, and much more, Highland City is not too far from beaches on the east or west coast of Florida. This makes Highland City and its surrounding areas a paw-adise for any human or pup that loves the water!

Just a five-minute drive from Highland City, you will find one of the only dog parks in the area: Dog Leg Woods. This dog park is pretty bare bones (pun totally intended!), so it would be wise to take your own amenities including dog poop bags, water and toys. However, it is completely fenced in so your pooch can run, play, and sniff out some new furry friends, all off-leash. Consider taking a good book with you and relaxing in the sun while your dog plays. The park is often frequented by regulars, so your pooch is bound to make some new friends!

Although Florida has plenty of natural outdoor spots to take your pooch -- like the beach or forest preserves -- sometimes, it's more fun to go to a dog park where your pup can play with some new canine pals. If you drive just 15 minutes from Highland City, you can take Lassie to Auburndale Dog Park. This park is split up into zones: one for large dogs and another for small dogs. This is a medium-sized park with places to sit for humans and lots of space for pooches to run and play. It's also adored by locals and has received incredibly high reviews and ratings, so you and Fido are sure to have a tail-waggin' good time here!

Only forty minutes away from Highland City is one of the largest, most stunning forest preserves you will ever set foot in: the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve. This giant preserve is over 100,000 acres in size. It does not have a dog park, but it has more than enough space for you and your pooch to explore! Take your running shoes, your bike, or simply a good book. Just make sure to keep Fido on a leash while you're here, and clean up after your pup to keep this natural area clean and beautiful for everyone.
