Tavares is a city in Lake County, Florida that's home to nearly 16,000 people. The city was founded in 1880 and was eventually incorporated in 1919. Tavares is often referred to as "America's Seaplane City" because of its public-use seaplane base on Lake Dora. Whether you're in town to visit the seaplane base, the seaplane-themed splash park, or the newly established entertainment district, you'll find plenty to do in Tavares! It just so happens that, in the abundance of recreational opportunities in Tavares, there are several dog-friendly activities, including restaurants and parks. 

Central Tavares is a neighborhood in Tavares known for being a hub of activity, and it's the place to be if you're looking for exciting dining, shopping, and other recreational opportunities. It's located on the northern shore of Lake Dora, so walking around the neighborhood with your dog on a leash is a fun way to spend some time. You'll also want to stop into Ruby Street Grille for a bite to eat and a refreshing beverage. This indoor/outdoor restaurant has a large deck where dogs are welcome to accompany their owner while they dine on dishes like turkey sandwiches or fish and chips.     Tavares has its very own off-leash park, and you'll find it on the western side of the city in the Duncan Drive and Lane Park neighborhood. Lake Idamere Park is a 45-acre park with a one-mile nature trail, a two-mile hiking trail, sports fields, playgrounds, and the off-leash dog park. The Lake Idamere Dog Park has separate sections for dogs of different sizes, and there's also a variety of agility equipment in the park, including ramps and tunnels. With the exception of the playgrounds, your dog is welcome to join you in other areas of Lake Idamere Park as long as they're on a leash.

    Palm Gardens is an area of Tavares that offers visitors and residents the rustic Floridian atmosphere that so many people crave. You and your dog can visit the Hurricane Dockside Grill in Palm Gardens for a casual bite to eat, and you're both sure to be impressed. The large patio always welcomes dogs, and the servers tend to bring bowls of water out for canine guests. Their menu includes items like steaks, sandwiches, fresh seafood, and much more. If you're lucky, you might even be there on a day that Hurricane Dockside Grill has live music!

That's where you'll find the West Orange Dog Park, a spacious off-leash park with big and small dog sections as well as time-out pens. Visitors love how clean and well-maintained this dog park is, and dogs get a kick out of the pieces of agility and play equipment in the park. There are often plastic pools set up for dogs to swim in at West Orange Dog Park, and there's also a water fountain and bowls. If you're visiting the park with a wheelchair or stroller, you'll appreciate the concrete walking path through the dog park.

    Pear Park is a nature center and conservation area in southeastern Leesburg, Florida, and it's only 15 miles from Tavares. This 268-acre park has several miles of trails to explore, and along the way, you'll come across all sorts of interesting plant and wildlife species. Other areas of the park include pavilions, butterfly gardens, and an off-leash dog park. The Pear Dog Park has several different sections for small, medium, and small dogs, and there are also enclosures where dogs of all sizes can play. The dog park has plenty of drinking water for dogs, waste disposal supplies, seating areas, and dog bathing stations.

    If you drive east of Tavares for about ten minutes, you'll arrive at central Mount Dora and the Mount Dora Dog Park in the Lincoln Avenue Community Park. This expansive off-leash park has not one, not two, but three separate areas so small, medium, and large dogs each have their own space. The park's regulars are known for being welcoming to newcomers, and within the park, you'll find drinking water for dogs as well as dog rinsing stations for the end of your visit. To keep pups cool on those hot Florida days, there are also plastic swimming pools throughout the park.
