It will take you and your pup about thirty minutes to reach the Heritage Trail of Madison, located just outside Clifty Falls State Park. You will be able to walk along the old railroad tracks, as they are still in place through most of the trail. The walk is mostly through dense forest and comes out at the water treatment plant. This is where you have a choice to make. You can take the switch back, which will take you right back where you started, or you can continue on north. The north part of the trail leads up a steep grade. It is challenging for most walkers, and is known as the steepest grade of rail line that can be found in America. Madison Riverfront Dog Park is set up just for you to sit and enjoy some time with your dog. This is a members-only park that allows your dog to get off of his leash and just run for a while.
